Emma Watson The New Scarlett
Taking over her role in Napoleon & Betsy

18 April 2008  |  Written by Olly Richards  |  Source: The Hollywood Reporter

submit to reddit

Emma Watson who – good news, perverts! – recently turned 18, has lined up her first big movie role outside the Harry Potter series. She's taking over the role previously inhabited by Scarlett Johansson in Napoleon and Betsy.

Watson will play Betsy Balcombe, a spunky young noblewoman who falls for famed military midget Napoleon while confined to the small British Isle of St Helena, where the latter is exiled. Johansson reportedly stepped down from the part because it was written as too young for her, although she'll still produce the film, which starts shooting in the autumn.

Sounds like a good move for Watson and it's rather an impressive stamp of approval that she's in a position to take roles offered to someone of Johansson's level. A good performance in this could set her off to a good start once the Harry Potters are all done.

RE: Emma Watson is FANTASTIC!!
She is moving on up in the world, and deserves a little bit of credit for it... She's not the worst actress in the world, and wil hopefully start playing some roles that really push her into interesting bounds. For example, she's rumored to be in the new Marilyn Manson rock opera, which would be a great coup for her, and a chance to show something a little different... full story here: More

Emma Watson is FANTASTIC!!
Emma Watson is a fantastic actress and she manages to combine her acting with her school work. If the part was too young for Jolie then Watson will be perfect for it because she can adapt to many different styles. No matter what people say, that Emma's acting has gone downhill, you're wrong. Look at the facts, She has been nominated for, and won, so many different awards - an Empire, a SyFy. The list goes on. See for more information. More

Stop and think will you?
Did you ever consider that she does alot of the dictation as part of her character in the HP movies. I dont think they could of found a better actress! I think she is absolutly wonderful! I think she would do awesome in any roll or position and she has come a long way. She has grown in to a fine young woman and her acting has grown as well. Every little quirk that she does in the movies plays out her character in such a way that no one else could have ever done. I completly support her and look More

Her acting keeps going downhill, whereas the other hp actors have improved. She overacts and does that terrible panting thing. I can't see her being good in this, she is really sweet but couldn't carry a film. And to whoever said Napoleon should be hot, look him and you will see he wasn't. More

WHAT WERE THEY THINKING??! Scarlett Johansson is beautiful and can actually ACT! nothing against watson but why choose someone who is good looking but not a very good actress when they could have someone hot and act good? if it is above the age difference, there's plenty hot young actresses could do good drama out there... I'm glad that they replaced Scarlet Johansson for Emma Watson, it gives her a chance away from Harry Potter and show everyone her talent. LOL about the pervert thing, Empire! I wonder who could be Napeolen? Someone hot right? Nobody ugly, someone brood and drop-dead handsome. I got names people! More

RE: "Emma Watson who – good news, perverts! – recently turned 18"
Excellent line there Empire. Hermione Granger has finally come of age. As per the comedian Russell Howard try this, substitute the word 'wand' with the word 'wang' and hilarity ensues.  'Hermione grabbed Harry's wang',  'Harry pointed his wang at Malfoy and shouted "Expelliarmus"',  'Harry and Voldemorts wangs were inexplicably joined in ways you can only imagine'. All the best of luck then!
It's going to be difficult for Emma Watson to get past the Hermione image, naturally, but hopefully this film will stand her in good stead for the future and she can then focus on other characters, such as these American types who she wants to play anyway, I think. More
