Singer Talks Superman Returns Sequel
Exclusive: Director confirms development

12 March 2008  |  Written by Olly Richards

Earlier today, IESB reported that there was a strong rumour that Bryan Singer was working on a sequel to Superman Returns and that Transformers' Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman would be writing the script. Well, we've spoken to Singer and, though we have no news on whether the Orci/Kurtzman story is true, he's confirmed that work's under way on the film that some said would never happen because the first was perceived as a flop.

"That movie made $400 million!" Singer says incredulously. "I don’t know what constitutes under-performing these days...Look, I can understand, I suppose, what some people mean. Perhaps some people went in with the expectation of it being like an X-Men film, and Superman is a tougher character than that. Especially bringing him back. It really goes back to the fact that you can only please some of the people some of the time. But, yes, I’m just getting back with writers after the strike. We’re just in the development phase. I’m starting to develop a sequel...with the intention of directing it."

Singer knows that there was some negative reaction to the fact that the first film focused more on story at the expense of action and is looking to redress that next time.

“The first one was a romantic film and a nostalgic film,” he says. “I’ll be the first person to own up to that without making any apologies for it. I knew it was going to be that from the outset. And now that the characters are established, there’s really an opportunity to up the threat levels...Clearly there’ll be a body count [laughs]. From frame one, it will be unrelenting terror! All those teenage girls who found the movie and mooned over James Marsden or Brandon? Well, I’m going to wake them up!” He may be joking about the unrelenting terror.

We have to say, we actually enjoyed a huge amount about Superman Returns. Brandon Routh made a terrific Superman and Clark Kent and Singer clearly cared about the characters. It was light on action, so it would be great to see a sequel in which we get to actually experience what Supes can really do.

What do you think? Do you want to see Superman return again?

Superman Returns again
Yes do it!!! Not the biggest Superman fan but loved Returns. Was made with a lot of love and care. Brandon was the like a mini Reeves which is a good thing of course. The only down side to it was the same as any other Superman film, people only know his main enemy Luthor. Maybe they should as everyone says chuck in Doomsday and play with the whols death of Superman storyline. Woked ever soslighlty well for the comic book. Oh and dump Bosworth she cant friggin act. RE: is everyone crazy
I liked Superman Returns alot. The nostalgia factor played a big part in that having grown up with the Christopher Reeves version of Superman and Returns paying homage to it in a real big way (you just can't beat that soundtrack!)!It was far from boring. But yeah, it was slightly light on the action (although the action it have was awesome) and probably 20mins too long,...(it really think they should've ended when Supes fell out of the sky!)   But another sequel would b More

Man of Steel with lead in his boots!
If this film does go ahead Routh should play the caped one once again - he was the best thing of the entire movie. Even Spacey ( an actor who many admire) couldn't bring entertainment to an otherwise drap & boring Superman Returns. I won't go to see Superman Returns Again (or whatever it will be called) but I'm sure that there are many who would like to see it being made. More

Original villain please (and recast Lois)
With Superman having been around for 70+ years, surely he must have a rogue's gallery that extends beyond Lex Luthor (and let's avoid the obvious Zod rehash) - I would be keen to see a sequel that gave the opportunity to showcase more of Supe's powers. I really enjoyed the first Singer movie, although I do feel Lois lane was poorly cast (good actress just not old/world wearly enough to convince). More

Will Brandon Routh Return?
With news that another actor will be playing Superman in JLA movie (plus Welling in Smallville)...does Warner Bros really expect viewers to accept 3 ACTORS playing Superman within a year gap??? Warner Bros. is MAD and I have one case example - Star Trek Nemesis (Poor Box Office returns!). Also, I would like to see either Parasite, Brainiac or Doomsday as the 2nd villan. More

I want this film more than I wanted Superman Returns.
It's so important they make this sequel, because it's this one, not Returns, that ultimately decides whether we get an ongoing Superman series or not. I love Superman so much, and it would be a tragedy if it all ground to a halt for 20 years just because Singer dropped the ball on the first one. More

What's their problem?
To be honest I got so much more satisfaction from the nostalgia trip and story Superman Returns delivered than any other recent empty or vacuous comic book interpretation that's been spat onto screen. Action for the sake of action typically results in plotlines being stitched loosely to the tail-end of the CGI and ends up flapping in the gaseous omissions the resulting film lets off. X Men 3 sucked the proverbial ass; Pirates 2/3 sailed with three shits to the wind (not a spelling mistake); the More

Oh yeah...
and f) Superman as a deadbeat dad??! Horrifically misjudged (not owning up to Lois at the end of the movie makes him a deadbeat). The kid is now an albatross around the neck of Superman in movie continuity; and g) if Lois doesn't know who Superman is, but knows she had sex with him (even though the mindwipe in Superman II would negate this), that is seriously creepy. Superman Returns was BORING
That's why it turned people off. And Singer can talk about $400m all he likes, if it was such a roaring success why have WB been so cagey about a follow-up, and laid down guidelines to Singer in terms of more actions, a lower budget, etc? These are not things that a studio dictates to a director attempting to follow up a big smash success. For me the biggest problems with the film were a) Superman never fights anyone - and in the one skirmish he does have he gets his arse kicked b) Kate Bosw More

So lets see Supes back and going against some of his really hard core rouges gallery, Brainiac, Bizzario, Metallo, Zod or even Doomsday, because lets face it the Death/Return of Superman st More

To answer Empire's question up above, I say I don't know. A lot of people hated the first one and if there is a another on the way, it will be slated once again. But for my point of view, I thought it was a great movie with less action and more talking. If it's to be, so be it. I will see it and find out myself. More

first of all, i thought this film was awful from the story on. i can't bla,e singer on the story but the casting wasn't good. i thought the film had potential and to tell the truth i had tons of expectations which were not met and i hated the film. another sequel would be a mistake. I think singer and routh would be AWSOME!! Dont get me wrong there was a couple flaws in the first film, but i think with the action in the second xmen film proves singers ability. If you watch x men one and compare it to x men 2 , the first film was charecter development, and the second film was action packed. Yes. I'd love to see another go with Routh and Singer. Superman just needs somebody he can hit, is all. Ignore the kid, maybe recast Lois and the sequel should rock. Superman Returns Again.
I'm a big fan of Superman Returns, although I can see its many faults plainly. I was so supportive of the film that Warner Bros contacted me (through the forum) and allowed me a Q&A with the cast and crew and sent me loads of marketing stuff (plus the DVD when it came out).   I'm so glad Singer is returning to Superman. It deserves a second chance
I think it would be great if this has a second chance, During the first film I continiously felt that it was going somewhere, but never got there. Actually a bit like X-men 1. It has potential but it never lives up to it. Cinematography was beautiful and Routh was terrific, so amp up the action, while still keeping some drama and yes, this could be great! More

Just make it good Bryan
Superman Returns was really a big letdown. Very dull colours most of the time, only the bright space shuttle rescue scenes were true to Richard Donner's films and the comics, the rest was grey or white and quite gkoomy which is suited Batman but not to Superman. Spacey was great as Luthor so more of him please, Luthor really Supermans only memorable villain where Batman has countless of the little devil. If the sequel is any good then please can we have Doomsday and The Death of Superman story More

RE:
Really glad to hear this. With JLA being made I didn't think there was any chance of a Superman Returns Sequel being made. Also with Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris departing as the writers, rumours are suggesting that Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman writers of Transformers and the upcoming Star Trek film are having talks with Warner Bros. about writing this. Superman Returns was reasonable, but would have been better if they hadn't just remade Superman I. The best parts were the surprises... villain crushed by flying piano for example. The worst part was Lois Lane. It was very lacklustre performance by Kate Bosworth. If you're outacted by your Smallville couterpart, then you're not right for the part. More

Just admit that you screwed it up Singer...
Returns is one of the most boring films ever made. And thats coming from a big Superman fan..Singer is in denial that the film bored everyone to tears.Recast Lois lane at the very least! More

i loved returns and think anyone who didn't like it needs to think really carefully before they decide to have children. The flick was a brilliant superman tale, the only downside for me was the super kid story. It just seemed a little wrong. Can't wait for the sequel. The quicker DC stop trying to compete with Marvel and beat them to a team up movie and just concentrate on the characters in their own films. More

i think a sequel would be great! although i dont see what the problem was with the first one (superman returns i mean) it was a little light on the action, but lets face it, the script was brilliant and the plot outstounding. oh, and visually, one of the best films ever. More

i LOVED Superman Returns, although it was a bad idea to make the action plot secondary to the love story. i mean, NO ONE wants a $250 million drama. this sequel better not take too long to come out, i'm giving them until 2010 before i start to kick some ass. More
