Terminator 4 Gets A Release Date
See ya May 22, 2009!

26 February 2008  |  Written by Helen O'Hara  |  Source: Variety

submit to reddit

OK, so you've already cancelled any non-cinema related plans for May 22 this year, what with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull opening that Thursday. Well, prepare to cancel next year's May 22 plans too, because that's the date that Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins hits cinemas. So if May 22 is the birthday of someone you hold dear, tell 'em you'll see them in 2010 - probably.

This release date puts T4 head to head with A Night At The Museum 2: Escape From The Smithsonian, making it a battle of the CG critters out to destroy humanity (well, Ben Stiller anyway) at the box office. While the last Museum movie earned more than $100 million more than the last Terminator movie at the worldwide box office, Terminator's longstanding franchise may nevertheless give Museum 2 a run for its money.

Sam Worthington (strictly, he's still said to be "in talks") and Christian Bale are starring in the film, with production due to start this May 5 in New Mexico. Now, if you'll excuse us, we need to go buy a 2009 diary.

Could it be a retcon - the real sequel to T2 this time?
T3 was a disaster in every possible area. It doesn't need to be as good as the two Cameron masterpieces. All that I ask is that you don't treat the franchise and the fans with the same contempt as you did back in 2003. (Christ what is it with 3s? At least Ultimatum rocked.) More

Is it definite that the Bale is starring in T4??? Need clarification!!! More

Posted by MOOT87 at 16:48 on 26 February 2008 | Report This Post

looking forward to that!
I dont think theis will be a 12, was the T3 movie a 12? well either way I thikn the TV show should raise the box office quite a bit. More

Hmmm..
When I heard that Terminator was being turned into a TV series, alarm bells started ringing, on high alert after that the abomination that was T3 yet I have been pleasantly suprised. The series has got much stronger after the somewhat shaky pilot and there have been a few interesting reveals.. SO, with a little less reservation, I will watch this new proposed trilogy, esp if it offers a look into the future, and less of the running. Cameron pretty much covered the running and hiding aspects in t More

oh dear god. This film is going to be so shit. They should have left this alone after T2, it's not a fucking franchise. More

Okay!
Right, so this year Indy 4 will return and next year at the same date will be the return of the Terminator! I'm qutie looking foward to this one, it will seem intersting to see how Christian Bale can hold it and also if it's better than the first three. More

it'll be PG-13 / 12 rated
trust me. It'll be for...y'know...kids. part of me is perversly pleased that Jim Cameron's signature films are being steadily ruined by sequels and a TV series. If he is such a control freak why didn't he keep tighter reins on the Rights? C'mon McG, put a Charlie's Angels cameo in! No wait, a song and dance number, no, a ninja assassin attack. No no no, hang on...put all three in. IN. THE. SAME. SCENE. More

'Cos we've got hi-igh hopes!
High hopes indeed for this film. Granted, McG is a bit of an arse but, at least he's being 'mentored' (sort of) by Cameron on this. It's going to be an all or nothing event i.e. either a genre re-vitalising movie or a complete load of toilet. As I've said, I have high hopes. Mind you, I had high hopes for that Alien vs Predator film and look how that turned out. More

Yes. this is definately comparable to ... crystal skull, what with all the original cast and crew returning. Oh wait, McG is directing not James Cameron. No reason to worry there then, at least Arnie is still in it. Oh Wait... More

This will be either good or crap-with-good-bits
Terminator seems to be on the upswing of late with The Sarah Connor Chronicles being pretty good so far. Christian Bale is brilliant in whatevefr he's in and there hasn't been a bad movie with him in it yet (even Reign of Fire was pretty good). Who's up for another Patrick Batemen movie - it'll make up for the unbelivably shite American Psycho 2. But McG????  Unless he calls himself a proper name (I don't belive he has McG on his birth Certificate) he will never be taken seriou More

McG haters. Why?
Stop bloody grading his work on Charlies Angels. Have you guys heard of We Are Marshall. Brilliant film. Stop being pessimistic about films because you will never enjoy it, regardless of how good it 'actually' is. More

McG IS A TWAT, I don't care what any of you say, why give directors like this the chance to ruin another franchise is it not bad enough having T3 by I mean, come on!! give the movie to Chris Nolan, Guillermo, Cameron, Scott, anybody but these one bit advert directors. Maybe we could have Predator 3 directed by Britney Spears More

Im so dubious about this movie being any good. Just because it has the Terminator Licence, does not mean it's going to be great. Did anyone watch the first episode of the Sarah Connor Chronicles last week? Or are you (like me) trying to terminate that awful programme out of your minds? (sorry, very bad pun) The Terminator is nothing without Arnie, trust me, even with Christian Bale this film will be awful! Kv More

RE:
I would tend to agree that bale wouldn't be involved at any level if this was shite. He's yet to make a bad film in my opinion. It's the level of invlovement that i would question. And to be quite honest T3 was so bad i don't see how McG can do any worse. (Although the brothers strause proved everyone wrong not that long ago) More

RIP - T4 Ending
Yep, I agree with most of the comments below that there is little to get excited about T4. McG is an awful director and Arnie will be difficult to replace (see the TV series for actors who do dreadful Arnie impressions...). Unless the T4 ending has the introduction of Robocop (similar to the Frank Miller Robocop v Terminator comics) - I can't see this being a box office hit. It will suffer a simliar fate to Riddick, Star Trek: Nemesis and Serenity which were all box office flops... More

That's just the American release date. Sony have foreign distribution rights to T4, and they may well pick a different date for us in the UK. That happens quite a bit, you know. More

This is to the death of The Terminator franchise. It shall never rise again. T1 and T2 were classics and then J.Mostow killed it with the god awful T3 and now McG will terminate the frnachise with his interpretation of the franchise. More

Short Memories
Has Empire forgotton how bad T3 was? Why are you so excited about this film? This franchise is dead and becoming more decomposed with each insallment. The producers must have thrown a bin truck load of cash at Bale to get him involved. I gueas they saved money on a decent director though. More
