Paul Bettany Is An Angel
In supernatural thriller, Legion

We like a bit of Paul Bettany here at Empire Towers – he’s British, he’s funny, he’s a damn good actor and he’s Mr. Jennifer Connelly, so he will always have our admiration. But we’ve been a little disappointed to see that the stardom we tipped him for when he first burst onto the scene with Gangster No. 1 hasn’t quite materialised, hampered by a run of forgettable movies – Wimbledon, anyone? – and a penchant for playing the scary villain, in fare like Firewall and The Da Vinci Code.

But we’re delighted to tell you that Bettany has landed the lead in Legion, a film that sounds, on paper at least, utterly awesome.

Set largely in a diner in a desert, Legion tells the story of what happens when God loses faith in humanity decides to send his army of angels down to Earth to wipe out mankind. Our only hope lies with a group of misfits who hole up in said diner, and their new ally, the archangel Michael (Bettany). Presumably, this is the same Michael that John Travolta once played, but a sequel this ain’t.

Now, we’re suckers for siege movies, and Legion sounds like it could be a belter, with an intriguing plotline, and a potentially excellent central role for Bettany, and angels fighting angels. What's not to love?

We’re guessing that it’s pretty low-budget, hence the diner locale, but hopefully first-time director Scott Stewart, who wrote the script with Peter Schink, will be able to conjure up arresting visuals.

Production on the Screen Gems film begins in March. Oh, and we should mention that Bettany has five films in the pipeline, including Inkheart and The Young Victoria - but Legion is the one that we're really excited about.

love bettany...
...but this will clearly be a very bad movie...i mean, come on! it would take the combined talents of spielberg, scorcese, kubrick and malick to make that plot anything near watchable... my moneys on the 'confused and silly mess with cheap cgi' bet... More

...I second that...
...I too am a fan of The Prophecy (namely because Viggo Mortensen is in it playing Lucifer!)...this could be like what Terminator 4 is doing with that franchise, i.e. the big battle robots vs. humans...this would take what is hinted in The Prophecy and show the big battle between Angels! (...I m not religious, but the concept seems pretty anti-God, where we are being made to feel sympathy for the holed up "good" guys?!...more info is required on that subject me thinks, not that I perso More

Born?
What's happened to that movie Born that Bettany was meant to be in? Had a script written by Paul Kaye about a couple being terrorized by claymation. Hope that's still on, sounds awesome. More

I absolutely love The Prophecy (the first one, forget the rest), so I hope this is gonna be as good as that one! Bettany can do scary and charming so this could be very interesting... More

RE:
L: britesparc Sounds a TINY bit like that one where Christopher Walken played Gabriel, emember it's name now't be arsed to IMDB either! Does this mean the turn of the century vogue for angel flicks is coming back? That'd be The Prophecy Britesparc. Great flick! Must say i like the sound of this. I find all things biblical and more specifically anything to do with Angels slightly creepy to be honest, but in a good way!! Paul Bettany although not my personal fave actor is a More
