Chris Eccleston Joins G.I. Joe Cast
Replacing David Murray as Destro

12 February 2008  |  Written by Chris Hewitt  |  Source: The Hollywood Reporter

Well, we'll say one thing for Stephen Sommers' upcoming adaptation of G.I. Joe - it's got one hell of an eclectic cast. And today it just became that touch more eclectic (eclecticer? Eclecticy?) with the addition of former Dr. Who, Christopher Eccleston, to its ranks.

Eccleston has signed on to play the villainous Destro, a Scottish weapons dealer who, we learned after a hasty trip to Wikipedia, is in love with The Baroness (to be played by Sienna Miller), and who has been known to play both sides - Cobra and the G.I. Joe guys - against each other. Boo hiss.

Eccleston replaces the Irish actor David Murray, who had to pull out of the role due to visa problems, and his presence certainly lends the project extra credibility. Let's just hope, for Eccleston's sake, that this is a better role than the last time he pulled villain duty on a Hollywood film - when he played a Manchester-born villain in Gone In 60 Seconds.

RE:
The entire reason he left Dr Who was of his fear of being typecast. So it sounds like he is one of those actors who aspires to retain some choice and integrity in the roles he plays.   That's why I'm suprised he's chosen such hollywood fluff. Dark Rising aside (you can be forgiven once for a big paycheque, and once only) His only other main foray into big budget land, as far as I can see, is Gone in 60 seconds. Mind you, who would turn down a bit of scene chewery bad guy action, even More

RE: Chris Eccleston Joins G.I. Joe Cast
Good news I think. As I mentioned in the other G.I. Joe threads, I don't think it's a particularly good idea to use Destro in the film, but I'm pleased to hear that an accomplished actor such as Eccleston is playing the part, rather than some unknown douchebag. Could make the character worthwhile, he should have no problem with the Scottish accent either. More

GI Jane will be better than this
Ecclestone has realised that he has to lower his standards and to get chossen above other similar actors (Paddy Constantine after all did Hot Fuzz and Bourne so he has a fun, blockbustery side his normal hardened, gritty persona we normally see). Ever since Chris did Dr Who he has done Heroes (with the worst girly hair in the flashbacks), the crap Dark is Rising and now this. He must be buying a huge LA house now he lives there. Oh and GI Joe will be crap - it's directed by S More

RE: Eccleston can do much better than this!
L: deano28 Surely he should still be embarrassed about Gone In 60 Seconds. He belongs in Hollywood as much as Americans belong in the Premiership. sp; trebuchet ms"]Being a big Action Force fan as a child (english name for GI Joe) I really want this to work, however with the amount of B list shit attached to it or in Eccleston's case (A list scumming it) plus with Sommers capacity to make gold look like shit, then frankly I'm not hopeful.
