First Look At Star Wars: Clone Wars
Coming to cinema and TV

12 February 2008  |  Written by Olly Richards  |  Source: starwars.com

Lucasfilm today announced that Star Wars: The Clone Wars will debut in cinemas (at least American cinemas – it's not clear whether a UK release is definite) on August 15, before broadcasting as a TV show in the autumn. This will be the first Star Wars film to be released by Warner Bros, not 20th Century Fox. More excitingly, the Star Wars official site has a first look at Clone Wars.

As the video says, this is an event that fans have been waiting to see since it was mentioned in the very first Star Wars film. We've had glimpses at the battle in the Star Wars prequels, but this will be fully explore the battle involving the Jedi and the clones against the separatists, and expand the mythology. Following the movie, the TV series will consist of an unspecified number of 30-minute episodes.

Lucasfilm has gone with a very stylised look for Clone Wars and we have to say we like it. It seems to work particularly well on Obi Wan, with all his angular facial topiary. We also like the look of new padawan Ahsoka, who looks like Shaak-Ti, but less warmly attired.

What do you think?

RE: No thanks...
I love animation and I love Star Wars. It looks great. I also think that this style will suit a longer format more than the fantastic but slightly manic style of the Tartatovsky Clone Wars. I think they'll comple ment each other well really. I'm sad to see so many predictable anti-CGI/ animation comments in reaction to this news so far. More

RE: No thanks...
This looks really good - can't wait.   Although those cynical of its quality after the prequel disappointment think of it this way - if you think its gonna suck, if it turns out to be good it'll be all the sweeter and more suprising.   I think when people are excited about something its seems worse because you've had all the anitcipation.  If you don't really care or you think its gonna suck, if it turns out good its suprising and usually means its better. RE: No thanks...
L: Cabal aka Boone I agree that it would have been better for the focus to be moved to a more interesting time in the Star Wars Galaxy, after ROTJ, before Phantom Menace. This timeline of 40 years is done, let it rest. If this series was actually planned for years, why bother letting Tartakovski (sp?) do that Clone Wars mini-series in the first place? Like I said, it seems that Lucas has realised that the public may have preferred someone elses telling of the Star Wars universe to hi More

fused. Is it the first episode of the TV show that will debut in cinemas or is it a movie length version? Either way it will be sad to see Star Wars on the big screen without the fanous Fox Fanfare at the beginning. More

Yes it looks good.  But what i want to know is were in the timeline this will fit?  Will it be set in between the 2 volumes of the 2d Clone Wars cartoons as Anakins hair isnt really long like in volume 2 but it isn't really short like n volume 1 and also Asajj Ventress is in it and she is killed in volume 2 so it must be set before that.  Anyone any ideas? Looks good but they already did it!
The Cartoon Network 2D clone wars cartoons were great. Why have they been forgotten so quickly by Mr Lucas. This new version just looks like a fancier version of that. Let's hope it doesn't do anything to contradict the previous Clone Wars cartoon. The star wars website seems to have removed all traces of the old cartoon as if they are ashamed of it or something. Strictly speaking this is a TV series that is getting a cinema launch to promote the run of TV. Looks fantastic, using the Clone Wars cartoon as a basis, and the cinematography of the films to give it that Star Wars feel. I enjoyed the serialised story of the prequels that showed the start and the end of the wars, and I read the novels and watched the cartoon for all the extra stuff and the majority of it was excellent (Read Shatterpoint and the Medstar Duaology!), so this will be a blast for th More

RE: No thanks...
Is it just me or does that trailer merely look like AOTC or ROTS? All the space shots, (and even the shots of the Clone Troopers) just look like they did on the big screen in 2002 / 2005. The main characters are clearly just CG versions of the Genndy Tartakovsky originals. This does seem a bit of a waste of time. I know the running time of Tartakovsky's version was little over an hour, and this is gonna be a full length movie followed by a 30 minute WEEKLY show, but still, Why George, Why? More

My main hope for the series is that the focus moves away from Anakin and Obi-Wan as soon as possible.   It seems smart for them to use familiar characters to draw in the casual viewers, but I really hope its a case of bait and switch. More

Digital Presentation
I'd love to see this on the big screen with a proper Digital Presentation, digital projecter and full on digital surround sound. ROTS was superb at Odeon Leicester Squares digital showing. It was liek watching DVD quality on an enormous screen. However, it looks like Pixar have really raised the bar with computer animation with the upcoming Wall-E. Lucasfilm will really need to pull out all the stops to match it. More

Oh dear Lord no!
PLEASE Empire. DON'T do another Star Wars supplement or one article which seems to take up half the pages (the other half being adverts). Or it will be another month trying to find something else to take into the loo to read and I really, really, don't want to resort to unsubscribing in a huff. It's all very pretty but the extended mythology really doesn't appeal. However I'll still watch it if it's on. More

Not getting my hopes up...
Last time I got excited about Star Wars I was rewarded with Jar Jar Binks. It looks nice, but its still a cartoon. I had previously understood this to be a live-action series (albeit with a lot of green-screen), so already dissapointed there George. Plus as mentioned elsewhere, haven't they already done a Clone Wars cartoon? I think they should have gone for a return to the hey-day of Star Wars - lets see a TV series about how the Rebel movement started and grew. I cant believe I am saying this, More

"the battle between the Jedi and the clonse " - apart from the obvious spelling mistake, shouldn't this be "the battle involving the Jedi and the Clones"? (or something to that effect). Unless I've missed something, the Jedi fought WITH the clones and not against. Until order 66 was issued at which point it wasn't so much a battle as a whitewash... More

Asajj Ventress
Hope they don't ignore the cartoon Clone Wars as the story arc with Asajj Ventress is crucial to the development of Anakin Skywalkers character. It was she who gave him his scars, and his various tussles with her made him call on the power his anger unleashed to best her on numerous occasions. Yes I am a bit geeky knowing this, but as it has already been put into Star Wars folklore, it can't be changed now, can it George? More
