Elijah Wood Talks The Hobbit
And some info on that sequel

14 January 2008  |  Written by Olly Richards  |  Source: MTV

MTV got the chance to talk to the once and probably future Frodo, Elijah Wood, about the upcoming movie version of The Hobbit and the actor had a few details to spill about the movie and its sequel.

"I haven’t spoken to [Peter Jackson] directly about it [but] I’ve e-mailed him, and as far as I know the two films that they’re doing, one will be ‘The Hobbit’ and another will take place between the 60 years that happened between ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings,’” Wood said. That gives a little more clarity to why two movies are planned. It had seemed strange that the rather brief Hobbit novel would possibly be made into two films and the idea of Jackson et al inventing a whole period of history for Tolkien's novels is intriguing, although it does offer potential to upset the hardcore fans.

Frodo wouldn't likely be in The Hobbit, since it's Bilbo's story, so this sequel could bring together some of the old characters we know and love. For his part, Wood says he'd love to return. “If I’m asked to go back and revisit that character and it makes sense," he says, "I would love to. I would absolutely love to".

Tolkien wrote in detail in 'The Appendices' of LOTR about the sixty years following the Hobbit, including some pretty cool stuff about the early adventures of Aragorn, when he went by the cover name of Thorongil if I remember correctly (to hide that he was the heir of Isildur), so I doubt there would be any need to 'invent' anything (sacrilege! I thought we'd heard that ages ago and also that the idea for a film between The Hobbit and Fellowship was based on a lot of "in-depth" notes by Tolkien himself. More
