New Spiderwick Chronicles Trailer Online Freddie Highmore battles goblins Source: Yahoo Movies
We're a little conflicted about the new Spiderwick Chronicles trailer, online here.On the one hand we just don't know if we can handle another pubescent kid fighting magical hoozits in a bid to become, cinematically, the next Harry Potter. On the other hand it stars Freddie Highmore, who is insanely talented and charming and can apparently add accents and being twins to the list of things he does better than most grown ups. On the other other hand it also stars David Strathairn, who is always worth the price of admission. And on the other other other hand it actually looks like it might have a little edge.
The film tells your standard story, based on Holly Black's book, of boy discovering magical land through medium of reading (go to libraries, kids, they're not just for fat spotty types) and some specially powered trinket. But this seems to be pushing those childhood fear buttons that most films nowadays are too scared to go near.
That little goblin thing is weird enough, and not just for his slightly ropey CG, but who didn't feel just the teeniest bit freaked out when the ogre started making himself known? That thing is frightening. Too many studios are too frightened of backlashing parents to put anything remotely unsettling in children's movies these days. But kids movies are always improved by a villain that gives you nightmares – the Child Catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the Wicked Witch of the West in Wizard of Oz, the script in Garfield – so we welcome the return of anything that scares the bebaby bejesus out of small people.

After watching this trailer (in poor quality as HD wouldn't work) it reminded me a lot of Labyrinth than Potter. Labyrinth was a terrific fantasy with great imaginative creatures (even if they weren't CG) plus with Highmore and Bolger in this then we can expect good acting. Actually now that I think of it I am reminded of Return To Oz as well..Interesting........ ... Read More
From the look of that trailer, I'll have my fingers crossed that this will be 'superior' family entertainment. Highmore is a great actor, hopefully he won't go down the Haley Joel Osment route. ... Read More
It really is hard to get excited by the lack of imagination Hollywood has come to these day's.
Especially when we have 7 harry Potter Movies, 3 Dark material movies (maybe), Eragon, Dark is Rising, Bridge to Terabithia, This, and alot more by the looks of the last issue... which basically have the same sort of storyline flow.... hard to be amazed by wizards, magic and goblins anymore ... ...which is a slightly more grown-up reason for going to see a children's film, but with Highmore and better looking effects than Bridge to Terabithia, it'll probably be worth a look.
Is it just me or does the trailer not make it very clear that Highmore is playing twins until quite late on? Most of the shots seem to be of just one of them, with Sarah Bolger. Unless that indicates that the other twin gets nabbed early on and they spend a lot of time fighting leaves to get him back. ... Read More
