The New Cloverfield Trailer
Here be monsters!

19 November 2007  |  Written by Olly Richards

submit to reddit

It's been a long time coming, but we now bring you the second trailer for Cloverfield, the none more top secret monster movie, directed by Matt Reeves and produced by JJ Abrams.

Was the wait worth it? We think so. We get a much stronger sense of the story – monsters attack New York and knock most of it over – and a proper look at how the handheld style will work while still retaining the big bang blockbuster quality, i.e. brilliantly.

Watch the trailer below and, for a detailed breakdown of everything within click here.

So, what do you think?

The shaky camera is gonna make me puke in the cinema - it didn't work in The Blair Witch Project, it doesn't work in this trailer More

Continunity
If this is ment to filmed using handheld - home video, then technically this should just be one long shot that goes on for the whole film - unless the film cuts out at points. However if you watch the helecopter bit we see it taking off but when its falling down we see this from the inside of the chopper - i know this is a little annoying but still - continunity wouldn't go a miss!!! The excitement comes from not seeing the alien
On reading what I've just written you would be forgiven for thinking I'm anti-CGI and a miserable sod. I'm neither (not that anyone reading this really cares). I remember watching Lady in the Water. It was all going really well: lots of suspense: only seeing the creature's eyes in the grass: when they went and spoiled it by bringing out the not-very-scarey wolf-type animal with grass for fur. Sometimes, with the temptation of creating some impressive eye-candy for the screen, they lose the More

RE: hazmat
You can't even remotely trust that trailer to give away anything solid - that person expanding could just as easily be one of the characters dreaming / having a moment on weed. Anyone remember when the Korean guy in Lost started speaking perfect English for next week's preview "Everything's going to change" only for it to turn out to be Hurley's hallocinating after too much cheese? Dreadful behavour. More

RE:
Someone was wondering why the military guy has his face all pixelated out - well, maybe since the movie is supposed to be based on homevideo footage "found" by the US Army after the incident, maybe they pixelated the soldier's face out to protect his privacy. Why would they protect his identity then? Standard Army procedure - or is he seen doing something that the military would rather forget happened? (Shooting an infected civilian or something?) Questions, questions..... More

Good trailer, (well just another teaser trailer really). But in saying that I think they are right not to show what the monster looks like, remember the early Jurassic Park trailers anyone? Lets face it, what everyone is talking about is what it (or they) will look like. Other than that, it could just be another bog standard monster movie a la Blair Witch style. I think The Mist will be a better monster movie anyway. More

Interesting but . . .
Why would somebody record themselves saying "if you're watching this, you know more than me?" other than to explain plot holes? If the film hinges on the wafer thin premise of people who are so self aware that when their city is being devastated, they record their every move on camera - to coin a phrase - there may be trouble ahead . . . Of course, shit films can have good trailers, but I have to say that looks pretty good. I wasn't really interested in it until I saw the trailer, so I guess the trailer's done it's job! It's putting an interesting spin on the old "Monster smashes up a city" yarn that's been done before with King Kong and Godzilla. It's no Godzilla (check out JJ Abrams at Comic Con on YouTube). Though it does look similar. But hey, any monster destroying NYC would look like Godzilla.  You're right on the BlairWitch part, but I did like the movie not gonna let out on Abrams. Okay lets sum this up. It could be another Godzilla. It does look similar, lets agree on that. It's filmed in a Blair Witch style. (Please God tell me it won't be as bad as that pile of overhyped sh*te!) It's made by JJ Abrams who may have sold his soul to Satan (Cruise) but is doing a Faust and getting out of the deal with his integrity intact. It has the potential to be a cult hit of the size of Fight Club or Blue Velvet. It also has the potential to be a failure of S More

best trailer
That's exactly what a trailer should be: Exciting, suggestive, with snippets of the best bits, but not revealing those moments in full or the full plot of the film. Brilliant, even if I'm a bit iffy about the movie itself... More

is probably as it's from the POV of the army. Keeping it in character, the army would only release "video evidence" of the cloverfield incident if they "protected their troops" or something. The Liberty head IS new - probably a reaction to all the inter-nerds who complained it looked too small in the teaser. It looks much beefier now. It's a crock. And new spin on the genre, I don't think so. Remember 'Signs'? Waited all that time to see the monster, and it was a man in a giant condom. And the worst thing is we're just hyping it up for the coffers of Abram, who already sold his soul to tom cruise. More

RE: Cool
Yeah, I actually think (read: hope) the movie is gonna be that way. Scaring the poop out of people with monsters we can't even see. It would give a whole new spin to the monster genre. More
