Paul Verhoeven To Direct Thomas Crown 2
He's back in Hollywood! Yessh!

Well, the chances of The Topkapi Affair – otherwise known as The Thomas Crown Affair sequel – featuring a lady’s rude downstairs parts have just increased by eight trillion percent. Why? Because one of our favourite directors, Dutch maestro Paul Verhoeven has just signed on to direct. And he loves his ladies’ rude downstairs parts.

Verhoeven allegedly told a Dutch radio programme earlier this week that he had signed on to direct The Topkapi Affair, which will see him end a semi-self imposed exile from Hollywood, which began after the disappointing Hollow Man in 2000. Clearly, the success of last year's Dutch thriller, Black Book, reminded Hollywood execs that the master of subversive satire (RoboCop, Total Recall) and nudie perviness (Basic Instinct, Showgirls) was alive and kicking.

We say ‘allegedly’ because we picked up the story from Comingsoon.net, who picked it up from Dutch site FilmTotaal, who could have made it up, for all we know. We don’t speak Dutch, and we’ve never listened to the show in question, Met Het Oog Op Morgen (translated as either With the Eye on Tomorrow, or Can You Believe Dirk Kuyt Is A Professional Footballer?). We could, of course, make some calls to verify this story, but we’ve got a meeting in ten minutes, so…

Anyway, little else is known about the details of Verhoeven’s appointment. Pierce Brosnan, who would reprise the role of Thomas Crown that he last played in 1999, has been banging on about The Topkapi Affair – based on Jules Dassin’s 1964 heist classic, Topkapi, in which thieves try to nick a jewelled dagger from an Istanbul museum - for years now.

But, to tell you the truth, Empire had given up hope of seeing it, what with mooted director John McTiernan’s current troubles with the law.

But, with this news, we’re excited again – with Verhoeven on board, expect it to be slick, stylish and more than a little sexy. As the great man himself might say, yesh!

RE: Paul Verhoeven To Direct Thomas Crown 2
So has this just fizzled out? I love the Pierce Brosnan THOMAS CROWN, it's one of the most elegant thrillers of the 90s, in my opinion. Pure class. TOPKAPI is probably one of my all time favorite films, and I think a pseudo remake could be a perfect vehicle to continue Brosnan's heisting adventures. I remember reading about this several years ago now, with nary a word or update since. Can someone enlighten me as to what may have happened with this project? Verhoeven is a fantastic director More

I actually had a good time with Brosnan's first Crowndon't at all mind giving this one a go. I'm not the biggest Verhoeven fan, but I'm sure he'll pull it off. More

Interesting, I liked McTiernan's first film, so I'm all for a sequel. Especially if Verhoeven's doing it, he's one of the best directors in the world IMO. More

True
As a fellow journalist from The Netherlands: it's true. The source is reliable enough, so don't worry. The Empire Tower of Truth is still standing (although it leans a bit like that silly Tower in Pisa...). More

Being from The Netherlands I can confirm that Verhoeven told this radio newsshow that he is to direct the 'Topkapi Affair' but that he did not yet know how much the writers' strike would affect the making of this movie... More

Kuyt Bashing!
Enough with the Kuyt-bashing already! But regarding this news, it's gonna be very interesting to see what Verhoeven and Brosnan do with this. Let's face it, Brosnan's been wanting to get his kink on in a movie for an age! More

Not happy about this choice of film for him.
If he does this film it should be after "Azazel", a Moscow police thriller set in the 1870s with Milla Jovavich. I hope he doesnt do a Thomas Crown 2, He 's always said he never wanted to do sequels and had trouble with "Basic Instinct 2". If he's back in Hollywood I'd love to see him pick up where he left off with "Crusades"...though Ahnold is a bit too old now, "isn't it?" as he would say. More
