McG's Making Spaced for US TV?
UPDATED: Edgar Wright's reaction...

02 November 2007  |  Written by Helen O'Hara  |  Source: The Hollywood Reporter

submit to reddit

The series that launched a thousand quotes, almost as many careers and two extremely funny films is set to be remade for a US audience. Yes, Spaced, that sublimely geeky and bloody hilarious show from the talented Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes (formerly Stevenson), is headed for a US TV reinvention. Now brace yourselves for the worse news. Ready?

Sure?

It's being produced by McG. And written by Adam Barr (well, at least it's not Roseanne) who is a former writer on Will & Grace.

Now we're trying to rationalise our deep-seated dread at this suggestion. After all, Will & Grace had some clever writing involved.  And the US version of The Office isn't half bad, despite the fact that the naysayers were ranged against it from day one. And McG as a producer is gonna be more restrained than McG as director... right?

But there's no getting past it - this just screams of blasphemy, horror and wrongditude. The Office may have been unglossy, but Spaced is positively grimy and all the better for it - and our Yankee neighbours have a way of making TV too pretty. We're trying hard to withhold judgement (A plague on both your houses! Ahem, we mean, good luck with that) but it's proving harder in this case than normally. Especially since Wright et al are not involved in the show and it's hard to imagine anyone else hitting that note of geeky goodness.

But what do you think? Are we oversensitive? Can it work?

UPDATE: Edgar Wright has posted a comment on his MySpace blog, which confirms that he is not only not involved, but was neither consulted or even told about the project before it happened. You can read the full thing here, but here are some highlights:

"I don't especially want to get into a war of words about it, but I am deeply pained that people think I've sold out and am whoring out our baby to a big network for a pile of dirty cash. This could not be further from the truth.

Someone posted on a forum about me, the folllowing. "Way to screw up a classic, you jackass".

Now when, in twenty years time, I release 'SHAUN OF THE DEAD: THE VERSION YOU'VE NEVER SEEN' with a CGI Jabba and the Spider Walk sequence cut back in, then and only then do I deserve such a slur.

Until then, I have to say it hurts a little. I can't stress enough that I'm not involved and am not going to profit from this new enterprise.

That's the lousy part.

The upside of this, is that I'm genuinely touched and taken aback at the fan response to this news of McSpaced. If the huge-fans-of-our-work-at-Wonderland weren't previously aware that there was a loyal fanbase for SPACED, they surely must be now. "

Let's hope that Edgar's reaction, and the overwhelmingly negative responses from fans around the world will discourage the makers of what we are joining Edgar in calling "McSpaced" from going ahead with it.

L: Timon It's that they're doing in without even asking Wright and Pegg and planning on doing their own thing using only the title. The US office had the backing of Gervais and Merchant, but this is unprofessionalism at its highest............that's what the problem is. o you're pissed of by the unprofessionalism? It's a matter of principle? Doesn't matter that it's Spaced? I think the level of outrage here is a little high! I can understand Wright, Stephenson and Peg More

RE:
The Office was a fairly unique piece of television. When the US said they would remake it, most people reacted in horror, but in the end it turned out to be quite good, apparently. I say apparently because I haven't seen US Office - I don't need to because I've got the original. I can see the point of remaking The Office for a US audience, as the US simply wouldn't understand a lot of the humour (gross generalisation I know, but you get what I mean). And the setting was easily transferable More

Excellent response from Edgar Wright - you'd think anyone who calls themselves a fan would already have realised this goes against the grain and has nothing to do with him. And the way the networks pull the plug these days, at least we can rest assured that it won't get as far as episode 3... More

I don't know, McG was involved in new series Chuck, and that really gets geeks. Also, this would have to be American based geekery, not British, which is quite different really, so I can understand why they'd buy the concept but have to rework it for an American market. Also, I don't get why you care, its not like it effects the original Spaced (apart from probably making Wright and Pegg a load of cash). More

WHY!?!?!
Ok, all blasphemy aside, this is still a major mistake. It completely confirms America's inability to deal with anything new or original. And anything that is in the category of programming is thrown about the time slots and played on the completely wrong channels (Arrested Development, Knights of Prosperity etc.). Hopefully Gramsci will attack McG while he is walking home one night and it will put a stop to this nonsense. More

Part of Spaced's charm was that it was intercut with very british, nostalgic references that would have only been relevant to a certain age group at the time (grange hill, rhubarb and custard etc). The whole point is that Simon and Jessica's characters thought they were still "with it" but were actually being left behind. None of that is going to translate across the pond. So?
Spaced is one of the greatest British TV shows ever and nothing can change that now. I saw a little bit of the US version of The Office, thought to myself 'OK this is shit', and never watched another second. If that twat McG wants to waste his time and someone elses dollars converting Spaced for the Yanks, let him. I'm not going to sully my eyeballs with the inevitable 'joke' of a result and as the majority of the US audience are sure to miss the point, it will no doubt be cancelled as soon as More

To US TV People
GET SOME FUCKING IMAGINATION! Spaced has been done to perfection, there is no need to ruin something pitch perfect by shitting on it with a gang of good looking folks one who is stupid, one who is kooky, two neurotic and a couple there who are kind of funny. And if there be a three camera style and audience watching it to teach people where to laugh thou shalt be severely destroyed soon! More

I'm literally angry with rage...
Yes US version of The Office wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to turn out and there's been a lot of top quality homegrown comedy from the states recently but, for the love of Jeebus, LEAVE SPACED ALONE! The fucking tv execs will take out everything that made it funny (grotty flat, drug taking, drinking wierd looking central characters) and replace them with the same old sanitised shit you see in all their other sitcoms. Its time we in Blighty struck back! Lets remake Friends except in our More

Won't work... probably...
Whils there's no reason why this SHOULDN'T work, in THEORY, I think it's a bad idea. Spaced is very British - it's not just about two flatmates and their weird mates; that's basically Will & Grace. The closest US equivelant to Spaced has already been made: it's the likes of Clerks and Mallrats, early Kevin Smith (Star Wars, comics, sex, foul language, buddy humour, homoeroticism... it's all there!). So whilst I'm willing to accept that it might be good I just don't see the point; take the More

And the constant pop references which would be very hit and miss with an Americanised version (like many of Family Guy's jokes).....to us anyway. Oh and Edgar Wright has chimed in via his MySpace page and I don't think it bodes very well: eresting part of that is, no-one has been in touch with me at all. Haven't deigned to get in contact. So my involvement is indeed very unclear.t least The Office had the support of Gervais and Merchant. More

RE: (wobbly top lip...)
L: Daniel Kelly It's all in the cast, if it's good then this can easily be good to. Forget McG he's just pumping in the cash if theres a good cast it'll be fine. Plus Will and Grace may not be a masterworking of TV but the people who script it are certainly not the worst writers out there! It at the moment seems like a weird idea above all else, need to know more about it before I could class it as bad.The fact is the initial impression is a bad one. Sure, there was witty dialogue in More

Posted by Hughezy at 11:23 on 30 October 2007 | Report This Post

oh. and also, America's idea of comedy is to put canned laughter after every other line of dialogue. sometimes even more often. Seriously... aprt from occasionally Friends and The Simpsons, when has American TV ever been intentionally amusing? and as you say... it'll have a huge vat of polish and wax poured over it. though you forgot that they will then marinade it for several hours in the worst kind of cheese known to mankind. Plus, I hardly think America is ready for Spaced... they largely More

as an old Harry Enfield character would've said... er.. .shouted... "OI! McG! NOOOO!" and i was against a Americanised The Office because I hated our one, largely due to the annoyingness of Brent (due larely to the annoyingness and smug-gitness of Gervais). And if any nation can be even more irritating, it's the Americans. More

...interesting...
...will Simon Pegg and Jessica Stevenson be involved, and in what capacity?... ...I agree that they should get whoever directs Flight of the Conchords on board. (Just got the DVD yesterday - extremely funny and original quirky comedy!) Its got a look as close as an american show is going to get to Spaced!... Plus american geeks are waaay weirder than ours (probably stereotyping here) so it might turn out to be some guy in an apartment dressed as a hobbit the whole time. Mind you I just saw More

Remember the Conchords...
The States have proven that they can do twisted weird and wacky any number of times (most recently with Flight of the Conchords which they've kept incredibly close to the tone of the original stage and radio shows). As long as they're given a decent team and not forced to make it into a mainstream popcorn fest then there's no reason why it can't have its own charm - it just won't be as charming or geek-referential or all-out mad as ten balloons as the original, obvs. *bursts into tears and r More
