Exclusive: Crank 2 Details
And Jason Statham will return!

05 October 2007  |  Written by Olly Richards

submit to reddit

Empire caught up with Crank co-directors Brian Taylor and Mark Neveldine recently and they spilled some details about the Crank sequel, set to shoot early next year. Warning: There are spoilers for anyone who hasn't seen the first film.

"Crank 2 will pick up exactly where Crank one ends," says Taylor. "It's a true sequel. Jason Statham will return. It's not a prequel, it's not his brother, it's not a dream sequence. He will [scrape himself off the floor]".

As you'll no doubt remember, Crank ended with Jason Statham plummeting from a helicopter clutching the bad guy, since he was already doomed due to the poison that had been injected into his body and would kill him if his heart rate dropped below rutting rabbit levels. This would seem to make it tricky for the character to come back.

"We're finding that a lot of people were thinking, 'Oh, Crank 2 can't be done'," adds Neveldine. "But we came up with an idea, we wrote the script, and after the studio read it they couldn’t believe that we pulled it off. And of course, the best test was giving it to Jason and Jason turned down every other project so he could do this, start this in the spring of next year. He was so excited, he couldn’t believe it".

As are we! For ridiculous, hilarious, literally adrenaline-fuelled antics, Crank was hard to beat. And the directors promise this will go bigger.

"It’s going to be more sexual, more violent – more of everything," laughs Taylor. "We realise with a movie like Crank, you can’t do a sequel and do 60% or 70% of what the original was. You have to go twice as hard. So that’s what we’re going to do. If we’re going to live up to the first one with the sequel – we’re taking it WAY past the point of the first one".

Crank 2 is set to start shooting on April 25, 2008.

what you mean how does he survive? He's The Stath, the only force in the universe more powerful than either The Hoff or Chuck Norris (Largely due to his being able to have the qualiteis of both, and be able to do the whole thing with an English accent). More

Huh?
How do you survive falling from a helicopter and going splat on tarmac? You don't. Not even in movies. Since 'Shoot 'Em Up' has raised the bar for comic violence in movies, this is going to have to be pretty extreme. More

the first Crank was brilliant!!! Even if one doesn't like the exaggerated plot line and epinephren fueled fun this film offers you have to agree the innovative shots have ou craving to see what this director can mix up for us next! This shall be an exciting film to follow I am intrigued to see if they can make Chev's second adventure more action packed than the first! More

As much as i liked the first Crank movie, does it really deserve a sequel? why can't hollywood come up with a few more original ideas instead of re-hashing old ones? More

Hmmm. I thought the first Transporter was solid. Very funny and plenty of action. But Transporter 2 didn't have the same magic. Less humour and the fight sequences weren't as good. I'll approach this one with caution I think More

OK...
Normally I steer well clear of films with such a ludicrous concept as Crank, but on decent reviews, I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt, and it was thoroughly enjoyable. On the face of it, with the ending of the first, a direct sequel would seem to be taking the mick, but then it was the outrageousness of the first film that made it work. More

Awesome. The first one was ace, I only bought it on DVD cos I read good reviews of it, and I loved it! a 5/5 film. A sequel will be fun. Count me in! More

Crank Doesn't Merit A Return
How are they making a sequel to Crank. Okay I know it's meant to be dumb, adrenaline high fun but a film can't survuve on that alone. Empire's four star review gave this film too much praise...Sure it did what it was meant to do but it still was shaky in terms of acting, plot and screenplay..I'm sorry but I could list a dozen more films I'd like to see a sequel to before this More

lets just hope the 1st film doesn't end up as a dream in the sequel, that would suck, and suck hard! More

I gotta say, the fact that the actual filmmakers were the ones pressing to do the sequel, and that this won't be some mad quickie cash-in has got me pretty excited. The first was one of the most out and out fun movies i've ever seen. More

Awesome.
I have no idea how they'll explain him surviving (the blink at the end of the film sugests they'd thought about it), but I loved the sheer mayhem of the first film. More fun than Shoot 'em up by miles. More
