Could There Really Be A Serenity Sequel?
It would be cruel to tease

04 October 2007  |  Written by Olly Richards  |  Source: Moviehole

submit to reddit

Now, take this very much as rumour at the moment, because we've all got our hopes up too much in the past, but Alan Tudyk has dropped hint that there could – not will – be a sequel to Serenity.

Talking to Moviehole for the release of the special edition DVD of the film, Tudyk (who plays Wash in Serenity and the series Firefly) said, "“They had to put [the new DVD] out because they’ve been selling out of the other one and so Universal’s like ‘So, let’s do another one’. And now… there’s now a chance there’s going to be another movie".

He had better not be joking, because that would just be unfair to all us Browncoats. Joss Whedon made no secret of the fact that he was originally planning to make a trilogy of films, but after the disappointing performance of the first(?) movie, it seemed hugely unlikely that Captain Tightpants and his crew of awesomeness would ever fly again.

It's doubtful that Universal would sink another $40million into a sequel for the big screen. But, given Serenity's success on DVD, would it be such a bad idea to make it straight-to-DVD, sorry, a DVD Premiere, as they're now called? The movie's always seemed more at home there and the audience would probably be much bigger.

Stop reading now if you haven't seen Serenity, because there's a big spoiler coming.

There is, of course, one thing that puts this in some doubt: Why is Tudyk in the loop about the sequel, when he was squished across the Serenity's flight deck. He couldn't be in it. It's not like this could be a prequel, since we already know how the crew came together and, well, why would you have a cliffhanger and then do a prequel?

Anyway, whatever they do, please let this be true, please let this be true...

trying to remain calm and collected...but failing miserably. Firefly was something unique, something beautiful, something great. It was a TV show that failed, but a TV show that lived. Serenity bought the "River" character to a kind of close (although what other secrets she may have gleemed it is still possible they are layered under miles of psychosis) Serenity 2 could take place at any time. Sure we could do a prequel, something that doesn't directly tie into where we left off but More

Please be true (maybe)
Firefly was an excellent t.v. series that was never given a chance. Serenity cleared up a few loose ends, Joss Whedon showing George Lucas how it should be done. The idea of there being a second film fills me with joy and dread, although a lot of sequels have been better than the first, so many great films have been followed with a dissapointing follow up. Joss Whedon is a great moviemaker but how can you improve on a perfect film? More

I didn't discover this until a risk purchase of the Firefly boxset based purely on word of mouth. Each viewing makes it grow on me more and more. Serenity deserved way more success than it had. It seems to me that the first film failed so spectacularly at the cinema because of the bloody awful, meaningless, poncy poster it got landed with. Who the hell thought that summed up such an intricate, intelligent, action packed, thought provoking science fiction film??? RE: We need a Gorram sequel.....or two!
Very few films actully fail to make a profit now because of DVD and this is just another example. Universial are leading the charge of making straight to DVD movies and I think if they will consider a Serenity sequel they will be looking at how well sales of Battlestar: Razor go. Strange how these two shows continue to affect one another....   The problem with a direct to DVD Serenity is that, and I could be wrong here, don't Fox still have the rights to TV productions for Firefly? I hear y'all. We need a sequal to serenity. They say that the film doesn't have a big enough fan base for it to be a Cinema release but surely all the DVD's that have sold just show that the fanbase has grown since the DVD release??? They should do the second one as a "DVD Premiere" and then release the 3rd one as a Cinema Release! It'll be amazing. No one can deny the chemistry between the cast or the brilliance of the world that Joss has created. This show was one of the best shows More

They have to greenlight something! I'd rather Joss was allowed to do his TV series - after all it was the very best thing on tv ever - and we could get another 6 seasons of it. If they can greenlight garbage like Jericho . . . well, I rest my case. But, if no series, then a film/DVD release would be heaven on a disk. Go on, make us mighty! More

It simply refuses to die - and thats why I love it so
Total credit to the die-hard fanbase of this project that they are even talking about it. I doubt they will make it, I don't think Whedon can take another disappointment personally and professionally, but its got to be one of the most intelligent and diverse storyworlds in Hollywood, and producers must understand that while this is a commercial liability, the fans have unfinished buisiness with a film. Something which is all too rare I think. Hollywood has a little movie magic left in it. So More
