The Rock Up For Two Roles In Shazam!
Should he play hero or villain?

25 September 2007  |  Written by Olly Richards  |  Source: MTV

submit to reddit

The Rock will star in Shazam! (the movie's exclamation point, not ours). That's a given. But will he play the heroic Captain Marvel or the villainous Black Adam? He doesn't rightly know, since he's currently weighing up whether to don good tights or bad tights.

You may not be particularly familiar with Shazam!, the most camply named of superhero series, since it's a long way beneath Batman and Superman on the recognisability league table.

The hero of the piece is Billy Batson, a kid who's chosen by the wizard Shazam to be a superforce of good on earth. Whenever he speaks the wizard's name he's granted super-powers and turned into a grown up. A bit like Bananaman, but with lower levels of potassium.

The bad guy is Black Adam, an ancient Egyptian former protegee of Shazam who is brought to modern times, where he does battle with Captain Marvel.

The Rock told MTV.com that he is currently up for both roles and is leaving the decision of which he takes up to the fans. It's not actually inconceivable that he might play both roles, since they look almost the same, but for different coloured spandex.

Which role would you give him?

RE: I concur Spanky......
L: the ageless stranger ......but where would we find anyone who could fill the shoes of the Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Batman or Captain Marvel as shown in Kingdom Come? They don't make chins or chests that big..... very good point. Damn Alex Ross, he sure loves his chins and chests... More

I'd like too see him playing Black Adam simply because it'd be nice to see him playing a bad guy for a change. More

RE: The Rock Up For Two Roles In Shazam!
Bananaman, lol, brings back so many memories, that would be such a brilliant childrens film. I can imagine this film being brillaint, cant wait to see two equally powered super beings   battle it out. Superman, are you watching closely? More

RE: He's got the build but not the acting skills
The best place to see Captain Marvel would be handing Superman's head to him in a Kingdom Come film. Ahh well, a boy can dream. More

He's got the build but not the acting skills
Yet again another case where Hollywood has thought about build rather than acting quality .To be honest i think wee should leave Captain Marvel for a while More

Capt. Marvel, if played right, is a great concept! A character with the powers of Superman, but the mind of a 10 year old boy. Like 'Big', only with punching. More

Hmmm.........
.....Frankly, I think The Rock would look more the part for Black Adam. But what I'm more concerned about, is the report from aintitcool, apparently from the director (I forget his name) that this film is gonna be a Big-style comedy rather than a proper superhero film. I mean, I know Captain Marvel isn't the coolest of concepts to begin with, but there's no need to make it even worse, is there? More

Black Adam, definitely. I like Captain Marvel, but Black Adam is definitely more fun, as any fan of 52 will tell you. Besides which, Captain Marvel needs to be more wholesome, in a Dudley Do-Right kinda way; The Rock's got that mischevious glint in his eye... More
