Bond Goes Bourne With Bradley Bond 22 hires Bourne's action designer Source: The Hollywood Reporter
Since the dawn of Bourne, James Bond has come under a lot of fire for being a dusty old relic of a spy, too busy shagging and sipping champagne to find time to kill people with magazines or jump through windows from rooftops. Casino Royale clearly took a big step towards Bourne-dom, with grittier action and much more bruising, and Bond 22 (still untitled) took a bigger one today when it was announced that director Marc Forster has hired Dan Bradley as second-unit director on the film.
Now who is Dan Bradley and why are we reporting on the second unit all of a sudden? Well, Bradley was the "action designer" on The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, which means he knows a thing or two about breathtaking stunts and heart-in-mouth action. That's not to say that he's only familiar with the Greengrass/Bourne style of shaky cam chases - he's also second-unit directed Superman Returns, the two Spider-Man sequels and is just coming off work on Indy IV.
Still, his posting does suggest that Bond wants a little of that Bourne magic, and will add fuel to the fire of the neverending debate about which spy is better (this writer's opinion? The one who's name sounds like "Mason Corn"). But it also promises more of the great action sequences that made Casino Royale the best Bond film in ages.
Basically, he's going to 'design the action'. He also did it for Spider-man 2 and 3 and Superman Returns so let's not get all hung up on the fact that he did two bourne movies. This is good news, hire the people that are the ebst in their field and make a great movie. ... Read More
The last Bond was so obviously influenced that it was arguably ripping it off, but there is plenty of room, as Bond is involved through choice and not a brainwashed casualty they can develop the other side of the story. I would like to see them borrow again from things like BBC's SPOOKS were there are numerous evil story lines including personal conflicts & loyalties, outrageous blackmail, modern day cover ups and more than a few dirty tricks (on each other). ... Some people have got it all wrong.
Bond is cool, Bourne is gritty.
Just because this second unit director has worked on the Bourne films doesn't mean that the Bond films will be a copy of these films style. It was Greengrass that went for the documentary-style jumpiness not the 2nd unit director. Who incidentally worked on Superman Returns - does that mean we might see Bond flying to save a jumbo jet? Come on! He's not Pierce Brosnan anymore! ... Read More
the 2 movies are completly different and im sure Bradely will recognize that they are 2 different genres and wont use his shakey camera in the new bond, but I think it is a great idea that he is on board so we can expect some great fight scenes and car chases that will put the rest of the bonds to shame, ...
