ReBoot Rebooted!
Classic cartoon to become film trilogy

It's a great day for anyone who watched TV cartoons in the mid- to late-1990s. ReBoot, the world's first CGI animated series and one of the most barmily inventive shows ever to call itself kid's entertainment, is being set up for not one film, but an entire trilogy.

The plot of the series was set in a city called Mainframe, where binomes and sprites go about their business and live their digital lives. The chief dangers came from the gigantic game cubes (not to be confused with GameCubes) which would descend on a section of the city. At that point, sprite guardian Bob and others would battle to beat the User, lest the User win and that entire neighbourhood be destroyed as a result. Further threats came from the evil Web, and dangerous enemies like Hexadecimal, Megabyte and (later) Gigabyte.

The series started off quite bright and cheery, with lots of pop culture references and kid-friendly characters, but got much, much darker in its third series and finally went off the air. The plans to reboot the series and take it to the big screen are complex - Rainmaker is teaming up with a comic site called Zeros To Heroes and asking five undiscovered writers to work up story ideas, which fans will then have the chance to comment on and get involved in proving. In August, fans will choose the winning pitch and a web comic will come out, based on that idea, later this year, with a film following after that.

It's a complex plan, but one that could fit in well with ReBoot's still-loyal fan base. And after the CG bubble has well and truly burst, it might be just the time to go back to basics and build a new mainframe.

Your Comments

Ok i am one of the most loyal fans out there so woo for me and many others. I actually knew about this some months ago, people should visit the website, they have storyboards there and any fan can sign up and contribute their thoughts to what is good and bad and what can be changed. Trust me the writers do listen and they have already made changes. These will be our movies, so go and help out!!!!!! More

I used to love that show but come on, can you really see this happening? Also can anyone explain to me why The Wrong Trousers' Feather McGraw had a Hitcock-esq cameo in every episode? More

I've been waiting for years to see it resurface, especially after the cliffhanger that was never resolved. I can't wait to see the stories they'll come up with. More

If they could capture the darkness and sense of doom from the last series they could make a great 12A teenage film. It was a good cartoon back in the day. More

I loved this when I was younger - will be interesting to see what they do with it. I'm sure if I saw it again now the animation would look a bit outdated, but it's a great concept, so it might work. Like someone else has suggested - perhaps some direct to DVD films might work better though More

I loved this when I was younger. Is it just my hazy memory or did it start to get increasingly odd after the first series? Did that main character Bob die at the end of he first series, I remember being shocked that the bad guys had won. More

Oh good grief! I remember this and actually was thinking about it yesterday as I was talking about some older cartoons and what people can remember. This was decent viewing and like britesparc, I was probably too old to really be watching it, but it was a break from revision! Warning, incoming game!! :o) More

I loved reboot and was a bit sad that it had finished without finding out the ending when they made another reboot where Enzo and the girl he was with in the first series had grown and were traveling through the net. More

This show was totally off its tits, but I enjoyed it, briefly, despite probably being too old for it. My chief memory is an X-Files spoof featuring a character called Fax Modem. More
