Hammer Horrors Rising From The Grave
British studio to be reborn

Hammer Horrors Rising From The Grave
Hammer horror is to live again! The British scary movie institution, which breathed its last in the 1970s is to be revived by a Dutch producer named John De Mol. De Mol has snagged the rights to Hammer's library of over 300 films, including Dracula, Frankenstein and the Mummy.

"Hammer is a great British media brand that has lain dormant but lived on in people's imaginations. It is more intelligent and character-driven than traditional 'goreography' and we intend to capitalize on this and make it a global brand," said Oakes in a statement.

The reborn studio intends to produce projects for both film and TV. So can Hammer compete in a world of Hostel's and Saws? Have at it in the forum.

Hammer the new Dark Castle?
Hammer Horror has the rep for being a classic in the world of hoor pictures and recently we have seen Dark Castle with Joel Silver produce some ok pictures. If the Hammer brand is to stand the test of time then I feel they will need to move into these waters for sustainability. Thoughtful horror fun, that will not end up on happy meal boxes but sporn video gamed billions and box office revenues. cult status with a bout of expensive collectable figurines that you wouldn't find in a happy meal ... Read More

The statement refers to the "global brand" and "imaginations". I think we're more likely to see plastic figures given away with Happy Meals than a new film. At a push a cheesy cartoon series. Maybe a series of games. People will see the Hammer name and think it's cool, no matter what it is. I doubt they could sell the films again because of previously mentioned reasons. ... Read More

Apart from Endemol man the rest of the consortium are in advertising; not good news, expect lots of toys and fast food tie-ins. All the best Hammer characters have been sold off to comkpanies that have ruined the franchise (Van Helsing, anyone?) so I'm not holding my breath for a killer movie. ... Read More
