Halo Says Goodbye To Studios
Fox and Universal are out

Whoops. Halo is now a film without a home. Both Universal and Fox have dropped out of participating in the game adaptation.

There seems to be some disagreement as to why the studios quit the project, though everyone agrees that the starring role belongs to that classic Hollywood problem: money. This is why it’s show business, people.

Rumours had swirled that the inflating budget was the source of the trouble, but the filmmaking team, including producers Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, are saying that the companies tried to get them and Microsoft to reduce their profit share.

"The only budget the filmmakers every spoke about was $145 million, less the 12.5% rebate that you get from shooting in New Zealand, which would put it at about $128 million," Jackson’s spokesman Ken Kamins told Variety. "That was the only number that was ever discussed. What happened was this: Universal, on behalf of both studios, asked for a meeting with the filmmakers just prior to the due date of a significant payment. Basically, they said that in order to move forward with the film, the filmmakers had to significantly reduce their deals. They waited until the last minute to have this conversation. Peter and Fran, after speaking with their producing partners and with Microsoft and Bungee (the game’s designers), respectfully declined."

Jackson and co – who are developing the film in New Zealand – will look into other studios. Oh, and don’t worry about their confidence in newcomer director Neill Blomkamp: "Everybody is supremely confident in Neill," Kamins added. "Part of what excited Peter and Fran was Neill's vision. We're very confident this film will move forward with the creative partners intact, who will take the film to production.”

Peter Jackson hauling a massive project around to every studio in town? We're getting the strange sensation of deja vu. Still, that could be a very good omen...

Movie version of Halo..
I reckon the studios are running scared - although it's a comic book adaptation - Superman Returns didn't exactly do the big bucks that, I presume, the studio expected. You only have to look at the worldwide box office returns relative to how much it took to make (adding in marketing costs as well..) and the profits are quite meagree by comparison. I realise this is a video game adaptation but you would imagine this being lumped into a very similair genre. More

Halo
I dont think its the right time to make this video game into a movie yet, cause other game's were made years later after they were released, and I think other old classic video games like metroid prime should be made first. More

It remains a video game adaptation
Come on people! The fact that some major names are involved doesn't make this a good movie. Look at the past... Video game adaptations are doomed from the start. Speaking of doomed, I did like Doom - but only for its stupid premise. It didn't want to be more than it was. O, and Tomb Raider. Any movie with Angelina Jolie in tight clothes is worth watching. Right. More

I'm a big Halo fan so fingers crossed that Peter Jackson finds another swtudio to back them soon as I would love to see this on the big screen, regardless of how bad previous videogame to film efforts have been. More

RE: Halo
I like the HALO games, but they are very overrated. This decision seems right for Fox and Universal's point of view, having to shell out over $200 million for a movie in a genre which does not succeed with a first time director and having to give up 10% of the profits..seems totally insane to me, HALO is not guaranteed to be huge...it would probably gross around $500 million worldwide if it was very lucky. Halo
Bit worried when i first read this but I think it'll be ok in no time, don't think that many studios will say no to PJ and halo! Fox and universal are just being nobs, hopefully someone will pick it up sooon or we could be in for a bit of a wait, again! More

ooooo what a bunch of n00bs
anybody who dissis halo obviously has absolutley no taste in games, and therefore cannot comment on game to movie adaptations, i agree the previous G>M have been terrible, but this is master chief! The man who can melee a grunt to death! or blow the Flood away with the ace shotgun! clearly any film that features the Master Chief must have some hope of completely PWNING. More

Played Mario.........loved it. Watch Mario Bro's movie .........hated it Played D.O.A......loved it Seen the movie and hated it. Games becoming movies is not a new concept but for the love of god some one get it right, Doom tried a bit of a different angle on it but the movie still didnt work for me. And as far as Peter Jackson is concerned i think he could be the one to Pull off the best Game to Movie change over there is, because he certainly did it for novels..... More

who gives a fuck!?? Halo is probably the most over rated game of all time anyway! i mean come on, why does veryone think its so good? Wow the graphics are slightly better than other FPS games! Thats it, and black left halo and halo two in the dust! Anyway, glad this has happened maybe they'll see sense and the film wont get made! Thank fuck for that! More

If Peter Jackson buckled to Fox's demands this time it just would have led to more demands later on down the line. Sod 'em! Let the film go some place else. What i've seen of the little known Director is encouraging and with Peter Jackson so heavily involved it's sure to be a big hit for another studio instead. More

RE:
Studio's are scared of putting that amount of money into a game adaptation.  From what I've read and seen is that Studio's still see game adaptations as silly things that only kids play where the demographic is between 10 to 25 year olds (which is a core cinema audience in my eyes, and why a new agency dealing with game to film adaptations has been set up for about a year).  The most successful so far has been the Resident Evil franchise, but they are indep More

Things like this make me sick, I never thought I'd see Jackson being in it just for the money, I thought he had some integritty, Of course the studios want the money, it's why they exist, but someone from a directing background should care more about the film being made than whether he gets a few extra mill to do fuck all with. Jackson and his bloody budget!
Can't say I'm surprised, King Kong made hundreds of millions worldwide, but barely made a profit due to the ridiculous $200mill+ budget Jackson demanded. Your one of the finest filmmakers in the world, Pete, surely you don't need gazillions worth to make a decent movie?! More
