After wowing festival crowds (it received a 22-minute standing ovation at Cannes) and providing further proof (if proof be need be) that Guillermo Del Toro is a cinematic god, Pan’s Labyrinth has now been selected as Mexico’s entry for the foreign-language Oscar.
We have to wait until November for hit to arrive in cinemas, but the fantasy horror clearly impressed both US company Picturehouse and Mexican movie officials. "We'll be vying for other categories as well, including best director, set design, art direction, score and actress for Ivana Baquero," Picturehouse chief Bob Berney told Variety.
Of course, being selected is no guarantee it'll even be nominated, let alone win. Academy voters, it’s up to you now – hand Del Toro a golden statuette and let him make filthy jokes in front of millions for his acceptance speech. You know it makes sense. |
