The Golden Compass Points To Eva Green
She's the queen of witches

02 August 2006  |  Written by   |  Source: Variety

Witches have certainly gotten a better publicist in the last decade or so. They’ve leapt from the ancient image of the crooked crone to the sexy spell-casters seen in The Craft or Buffy.

And now they’re getting a sexy new representative in the form of Eva Green. The Kingdom Of Heaven actress is leaping from the just-finished Casino Royale to The Golden Compass.

You already know the story – in a parallel universe, young Lyra Belacqua (Dakota Blue Richards) searches for a kidnapped friend and tries to escape the evil Mrs Coulter (Nicole Kidman). Lyra will have some help in her journey from Serafina Pekkala, the queen of witches. She’s signed for this one film, with an option for two more should the trilogy be completed.

Chris Weitz is busy marshalling his troops and the adaptation of Philip Pullman’s first novel starts shooting next month at Shepperton.

im supprsied Pullman would have signed off on the project unless sum semblance of his ideas from the book remained in tact. Unless hes just a money loving son-of-a-bitch who eagerly sold out his ideals for a bita cash. We've already go Narnia and harry potter, we need a fanstasy franchise WITH A DIFFERNCE More

Lord Asriel
I always thought Pierece Brosnan was the ideal actor to play Lord Asriel. Nicole Kidman's a fine choice as Mrs Coulter. The voice of Iorek? It's got to be Michael Clark Duncan. More

reservations
Im not so thrilled about the casting choices so far, with the exception of eva green. Good choice. Paul Bettany as Asriel, what the fuck! it should be played by someone older like Ralph Fiennes or even Harrison Ford. Catherine Zeta-Jones would have been perfect in the role of Mrs Coulter, i always imagined the character looking like her in the book. As for the voice of Byrinson, it should be Robby benson who voiced 'The Beast' in Disney's classic. 'The Golden Compass'............give me a fu More

Excellent decision
She is perfect for the role of Serrafina Pekkala - she's a wonderful actress, and she's got an mysterious, unconventional beauty that I think would suit the character perfectly. More

RE: Excellent
Nice casting. She's got the right face for Serafina.   L: harryc If Chris Weitz gets Owen Wilson as Lee Scoresby (c'mon he can play him...) It'll be another bonus. sp; He's a little too young isn't he? More

hmmmm, is it going to be worth it....
Safaa's right.... IMDB lists Ian McShane as the voice of Iorek. I just can't get the imagine a mulleted Lovejoy as a battle armoured bear!!. However whatever the casting the removal of the religious aspects of the storyline leaves the entire project impotent. Seriously, whats the point.... Man vs God. What will they have to replace it.... Ioreks Vioce
Just gotta be someone like James Earl Jones or someone with similar authority and warmth in his voice... Agree that Owen Wilson would be ace as Lee Scoresby tho! More

Wow,these guys are getting a great cast.I'm in love with Eva Green, she's absolutely gorgeous and very talented. I think Paul Bettany is a great actor but I think they should find someone more rugged, you know, like Eric Bana,Hugh Jackman,Russel Crowe,Guy Pearce(I know, but hey Oz is the place that defines rugged)or even Gary Oldman(he can do anything, even if he's a litlle older than the original character) More

Good choice
Eva Green will be wonderful as Serafina. I wonder if they'll keep the gipsies in the story. If I well recall, Serafina was in love with a gipsy that is quite old by the time Lyra's adventure begins. As for Iorek's voice, I'm not sure but I read somewhere that Ian McShane would lend his voice to the character. As for Kidman, ah well, I suppose she might make it as Mrs. Coulter, but I can't see any strong chemistry between her and Paul Bettany (still in talks). Paul Bettany is a great act More

Excellent
Eva Green as Serafina! Just how I pictured her whilst reading the book (ok, not exactly like Eva Green, but more or less the same features...) First Nicole Kidman as Mrs. Coulter (don't actually think it could have been anyone else!) If Chris Weitz gets Owen Wilson as Lee Scoresby (c'mon he can play him...) It'll be another bonus. Any ideas on the voice of Iorek Byrnison?? More
