Gladiator: The Musical?
Will you be entertained?

18 May 2006  |  Written by   |  Source: Contactmusic

Could you picture Ridley Scott’s Gladiator as an all-singing, all-dancing musical? Well, maybe not the dancing part, but if Lord Of The Rings can become a tune-laden theatre extravaganza, then clearly anything can.

But according to reports over at Contactmusic, the tale of Maximus Decimus Meridius will be the next big thing on the West End stage. With one of the movie’s writers (William Nicholson) apparently hard at work on the story and plans to use Hans Zimmer’s music already afoot, all that’s left to sort out is who’ll be playing the armoured hero.
Scratch Russell Crowe for a start – he wouldn’t want to be playing the role he’s already conquered every night for tourists and arty types, even if it did get him a shot at theatre glory. Nope, the producers are apparently looking at Broadway regular Brian Stokes Mitchell to take over the part.

"It's a terrific story which, with the right songs, will be a great show," an “associate” of producer Brian Eastman apparently told the site. Can’t wait – anyone for a rousing chorus of ‘Unleash Hell’? (“At my signal, unleash HEEEELLL… Well done centurions, you fought so WEEEELLL…”) Yeah, we wouldn’t hire us either.

What?
3 words: PLEASE GOD NO. Musicle? Opera maybe, Maximus the Tennor I can see, and the epicness (is that even a word?) would suit the stylye but Maximus the High Tennor no. He was one of the last truly masculine heroes of the 21st century and now the metrosexual lot wanna take him away from us as well? How very dary you! More

What a disaster. Have the theatre guys lost their inspiration completely? How can a Gladiator musical be anything other than bad taste? And I read an article saying how awful LOTR was on stage. I mean, if a film is really succesful, can't it be left at that? Let's go and ruin it by adding songs and dancing Romans. Good luck West End. More

Definition of Hell
Why? What possible good can this bring to the world? Lord of the Rings on stage is apparently rubbish so learn your lesson folks - stay away from amazing, big scope films. There may be a hearty inner story but this is not for the stage. And who would see a gladiator fight minus chariots and amazing stadium? And without gladaitor fights just what are we seeing here? Please, someone, wake up and smell the blood sweat and tears. More

Now this.....
..just seems silly to me. Gladiator was a great film and I can't see how it would transfer into a musical. Mind you, I don't really know what they were thinking with the musical Lord Of The Rings either, but hey.... More
