Wow! Good films getting nominations.
Sadly however most of the results are predictable - brokeback mountain, ang lee, witherspoon and hoffman will win. Regarding the lack of Harvey Weinstein's influence, this is both good and bad. In the past he has helped dross like Chicago win but also helped Shakespeare in Love triumph over the middling Saving Private Ryan (only the action sequences are good). Speaking of Mr Spielberg, would you please stop letting Ian Freer review his films!!! Hopefully then we will get proper reviews rather More

What??? No 'Serenity'?!?! It's an outrage! I thought at least it might get a nod for 'Visual Effects'... It's been rigged, I tells ya! Terrence Howard
Oh yeh, one thing I have to say that they did get right was Terrence Howards nomination. He has been a rising star for a long time, very talented actor. It was a suprise to see him nomiated but a very nice suprise. Anyone else seen hustle and flow? agree or disagree? By the way brokeback mountain is a good film, very good film, and I htink Ledger desevres his shout at a nomination too, but im disapointed not to see Ken watanabe up for an oscar (the chairman) also from last samurai. Why or Why
I cant grasp why William Hurt is up for an oscar, it kinda undermines it for me... I think Hurt is a fantasic actor, truly... but what was so great about his turn in history of violnce? Just doesn't seem right. Oh well ey, just would of been nice to see maybe Ryan Phillip for Crash, or Lorenz Tate getting a nomination. Does anyone else feel that the oscars still get things abit to wrong from time to time? More

poor. POOR!
As usual, mostly Bollocks. Brokeback mountain was one of the worst films I have EVER seen. Visual effects for Kong? Did you see the appallingness that was the effects? they were rubbish! Maybe Kong himself was ok (just), but the effects in Star wars were much better. The fact that Narnia has been considered for anything shows how poor these awards have become. More

Bad nominations
I think that some of the nominations are good but for best actress i think for certain that Kate Winslet should of been put up there, and the reason i think this is because she has had some amazing films out recently and they havent even been noticed. How unfair!!. And none of the good films have been put in best film or anything. Nicole Kidman hasnt been mentioned, or Cate Blanchett, or Scarlett Johnasson. Yes, I agree Serkis does enable the film-makers and real actors to engage a little more with the monkey as he did with Gollum (which frankly was his best work to date) but we're talking about a Best Supporting Actor nod here!   This is just silly. More

It's too early for Digital Performances
It's really only Andy Serkis and WETA that have pioneered the whole 'virtual performance' thing, so it is too early to start honouring it because there would be a huge backlash. I disagree with BenClay2005, it takes a talented actor to bring depth to the performances in LOTR and King Kong, it's not a 'nice little earner'. Case in point, look at the CG capture fro the Mr Hyde character in 'Van Helsing', digitally accurate, but completely devoid of any nuance or personality. Same with the Dobby ch More

I'm not surprised, but I am disappointed that Serenity didn't get a single nod, even in the joke catagories like make up. (I mean did you see the reavers?!) even though it wasn't the huge commercial success the fans wanted it to be, it was still rated critically: Got four stars from Empire and was voted BBC Film of the Year. I cannot believe that ANYONE could possible feel bitter, disappointed or any other similar emotion that Andy Serkis has been "overlooked" in the Best Supporting Actor category. Until the Academy throw up a (frankly ridiculous) Best Motion Capture for a Virtually Totally CGI Film category, then poor ole Andy will have to wait. Brokeback broke my back
I can't comment on too many of the films as i've only seen brokeback - i also have the 35 mile drive to a multiplex issue. Blasted English countryside. Anyway, i DO think Heath Ledger deserves his nomination, and good on him if he wins, but it's not the best adaptation ever. The second half dragged on (which was very painful - they don't even have comfy seats!) and it lacked some of the brutal honesty the book conveys. Apart from that i'll have to wait till they're out on DVD. More

A quality year... I think!
I've only seen Brokeback Mountain out of the major nominated films, and it will probably be the only one of the nominated I see before the Oscars because it's a 35 mile drive to my nearest decent multi-plex. Good to see Hollywood rewarding quality over quantity (i.e. so-called blockbusters) and damned my decision to live in the middle of the English countyside so I can't watch any of them. Boo hoo!!! It's always frustrating when nominations are announced, partly because most of these films haven't been released over here yet, so it's hard to have an opinion, but also because at a scandalous £7.60 a time at my local Odeon, I simply can't afford to see as many of these films as I'd like to (not that it would show stuff like Capote anyway), but that's another issue I suppose. Bloody Brokeback
While I know it's going to clean up, "Brokeback Mountain" in no way deserves half of it's nominations, and is nowhere near one of the top 5 films of the year, not even top 20. The omission of "Walk the Line" from best film and director is criminal, and if either Heath or Jake (much as I like them as actors" win then it'll be a travesty. I can't comment on "Capote" or "Good Night Good Luck", or many of the smaller films that haven't appeared here yet More

I only want to add something: I don't believe that Steven Spielberg will win anything although he deserves to get an Oscar for Director and Picture. I do not see how Narnia or Kong could win effects. The lion and the gorilla were good but the effects focused so much on these main characters that the rest was shoddy! (the fox in Narnia and the dinosaurs in Kong are awful!). War of the Worlds however, has the best effects I have ever seen and it will be a disgrace to see it lose out on oscar night. No surprises but that's not a bad thing
Some good choices for best picture. I'm certainly hoping to see Phoenix and Witherspoon receive awards for Walk The Line. Both certainly gave outstanding performances and their singing for the roles is nothing to overlook. Heath Ledger was phenomenal in Brokeback. So, I wouldn't be disappointed to see him walk away with best actor if it fails to go to Phoenix. Memoirs deserves an award in costume design and art direction. What a visually stunning film. One major snub
I live in the US now (was living in London up until a couple of months ago) and I'm not sure if this is out in the UK yet or not, but The New World smacks the pants off of all of those movies. It should have been nominated in place of Munich which, besides losing its direction and pacing halfway through, ends with the WORST last two scenes in my recent memory. Although I don't think Knightley would give such an sphincter-clenchingly embarassing 'five year old at a birthday party' speech as the one Portman treated us all to at the Globes last year. It's also nice to see the sterling work of the Pott More

another day, another box of stolen pens
most of these nominations were pretty gosh darn obvious, but the thing is with most of them not even released in the uk yet it's hard to know wgether they're accurate. they seem your usual Oscar baiting noms though (a bit like Philaedelphia and The Accused etc) but i support Ledger and Glyenhaal's nominations but the thing about Brokeback Mountain is that it's promoting themes people should know by now! i've never been homophobic so instead of feeling any real tragedy i was sitting saying " More

No Surprises there....
Well, I, for one, am pretty pleased with the nominees this year. Granted, most of them were shoe-ins given the films that were inevitable contenders but it's still nice to have the odd curve-ball in there to keep us all awake into the early hours on the night. It's got a lot of attention, but I really do hope that one of the lads from Brokeback wins. They've got tough competition but they deserve some recognition of their subtle, convincing and underplayed performances with difficult material More

Star Wars snubbed
While I'm very happy to see Brokeback Mountain nominated eight times - hardly a surprise - and Pride & Prejudice four times, I am very disappointed that SW Episode III only got 1 nomination! Narnia was great, but its CGI was indeed mediocre at some points. You would almost think that films released more than 6 months ago tend to be "forgotten"...Ah well, SW got the People's Choice Awards and GL likes that better anyway! More

Big Block Busters are out, Old School is in
So it seems that with this year heralds the death of the Block Buster syndrome. The widest nominated film, Brokeback Mountain, although highly praised and receiving good reviews, hardly fits into the pop corn fodder mould. King Kong has been rightfully ignored. It seems that Hollywood is moving back to traditional story telling with films that discuss important social and political issues. Hollywood is going back to it's roots if you will. In 2005 many CGI enhanced films, the kind that used to More

fairly happy
i'm glad to see munich getting the acolades it deserves and war of the worlds for visual effects. I'm very disappointed not see Crowe with a nomination instead of Terrence Howard but its good to see Giamatti getting a nod. William Hurt getting a nod i thought was ridiculous if anyone from AHOV deserved a nod it was Ed Harris. No real shocks really i dont think Crash deserves a Best Pic or Directin nominee a very very good film but its not oscar worthy in those 2 categories especially because Con More

A great list, but they should have taken a risk and got Christopher Nolan in for his Batman direction. Better than Crash, in my view. More

Not that many surprises.
Except Keira as BEST Actress. I wasn't surprised to see Kong and Narnia not in the big categories but against each other in the smaller prizes. If Narnia does get the gong for its slip-shod CGI then the whole Academy system needs to be torn down and started from scratch. More

Surprises
Hugely surprised that Terrance Howard was nominated, considering the academy's usual preferances. also think that Walk the Line was cruelly rejected big time - perhaps because of how similar it is to Ray. - Rock on Wallace And Gromit Though!!!!! More

Charlize???
OK, now I like Charlize Theron and she deserved her Oscar for Monster but what is she doing in this year's nominations?? How was it possible to see past the utter over-worthy tripe that was North Country to see the actual performance??? It's a definite two hander this year - Witherspoon is my preference, but Huffman may swing it! More

Good on her!
I think it's safe to assume Keira Knightley is not going to win, but good on her for gettin a nomination. It's nice to see some younger nominees this year, Ledger, Phoenix, Witherspoon, Willams, perhaps the acadmey will recognise the new talent More

Keira Knightley?!?!?
You've got to be kidding me? Keira Knightley?!?!? What a laugh! I'm surprised at Terrence Howard. But that's cool. And Michelle Williams? Long gone are the days of Dawson's Creek. Good for her. So Wallace and Gromit gonna pick up another Oscar this year too? More

A Very Good Year...
I'm pretty much satisfied with all that. Having just seen - and been thoroughly impressed by - Munich, it was nice to see it finally recieve some recognition. So whether Spielberg or Ang Lee triumphs, I'll be happy. It's a pitty Mortensen wasn't nominated for Violence, but as I didn't expect it to get anything, it's nice to see it pop up a little bit. George Lucas must be gutted though - I bet he thought ROTS was a shoe-in for a visual effects nod. Mind you, Ian McDiarmid's make-up was pretty gr More

RE: Oscar Nominations Announced
Pretty open contest this year, no real standout films though its a shame /i] a frankly awful and insulting film can be nom but of Violencebsp;nothing other than the suprise Hurt nom and screenplay. Also Judi Dench getting a nom is a hoot, considering she was just the same old Judi, I guess the yanks like that sort of thing.  More

How exciting!
Luckily all the decent films have been nominated for best picture and the same with the other catergories. This year seems alot more exciting as all of the films were great and that's what's important. Knightley won't win though, we're looking at either Huffman or Witherspoon. More
