Two New Creature Features
More werewolves and vampires by the year's end

Some things never go out of fashion – leather jackets, space hoppers, monster movies, the Cheeky Girls… good news today then, that not one but two (yes, that’s right, count ‘em) new monster movies are on the way. In the red corner, we have Perfect Creature, and in the blue, Skinwalkers.

20th Century Fox are the major studio closest to signing a deal with Arclight Films, who are representing Perfect Creature, a project born in New Zealand. In fact, forget The Lord of The Rings, forget King Kong, this is apparently the biggest sale ever made of a Kiwi film.

It’s a UK / New Zealand production starring Dougray Scott, Saffron Burrows, Stuart Wilson and Scott Wills. Helmed by native New Zealander Glenn Standring (whose CV includes the unusual The Irrefutable Truth About Demons), the story is set in “a retro-futuristic world”, described as a sci-fi alternate 60’s/70’s, where vampires and humans peacefully co-exist – vampires accepted as the next step on the evolutionary ladder. All is well until vampire super-flu breaks out, and one begins preying on humans. Cue the pairing up of a human cop (Burrows) and a vampire cop (Scott) to bring the perp in. Sounds brilliant! Empire is looking forward to the planned wide release towards the end of the year.

Meanwhile, Skinwalkers has been acquired by Lions Gate Films. Directed by Jim Isaac – the man who helmed Jason X, but probably best remembered for supervising the special effects on three major Cronenberg films: eXistenZ, Naked Lunch and The Fly. It concerns a twelve year old boy who is the centre of a battle between two packs of werewolves – one sworn to protect, the other sworn to kill him. Whether any similarities to the story of Nightwatch will help or hinder Skinwalkers is anyone’s guess.

No word yet from either camp on whether either film will feature so much as a cameo from the Cheeky Girls (no canine jokes please).
