| 16 March 2005 | Matt Damon Talks The Departed And now Anthony Anderson has joined the cast - egads! |
|
If you're ridiculously excited about the prospect of The Departed – Martin Scorsese's forthcoming remake of the classic Hong Kong crime thriller, Infernal Affairs, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg, and Jack Nicholson – then you're not alone.
"It’s really really exciting," Damon told us at the Sony Ericsson Empire Awards. "The script is great, it’s by Bill Monaghan, who’s one of the best writers around at the moment. I met with him a couple of days ago, and I’ve already been working with the State Police up there, going out on raids of houses and stuff."
Damon, as you may or may not know, will take on the role of a gangster who goes undercover in the Boston Police Department, at the behest of Nicholson's crimelord… only to discover that there's a police mole (DiCaprio) within their own ranks.
"It’s coming together, it should be good," added Damon. "It’s ours to lose at this point. When you make a movie and you feel good about the script heading out of the gate, it’s pretty much yours to screw up."
And, by an amazing coincidence, just two days after Damon uttered those very words, news has broken that Anthony Anderson has signed up to join the cast. Yes, Anthony Anderson, the deeply unfunny star of such classics as Kangaroo Jack, Scary Movie 3 and Agent Cody Banks 2. He'll play a cop with emotional ties to both Damon and DiCaprio's characters.
But before you start shaking your heads in despair, let us just say that we're willing to trust Marty in any and all endeavours that he undertakes. Anderson may be best known for pratfalls and unfunny faces, but he's also been acclaimed Stateside for his dramatic turn in the forthcoming Hustle And Flow, so we'll let this one go… for now. The Departed should mark a return to the gritty, lean, mean Scorsese of old, and we can't wait – as long as Marty doesn't stick an effin' CG kangaroo in there, that is… |
