| 14 March 2005 | Where's Hot Fuzz? It's been a year since Shaun – where are Wright and Pegg with our next fix? |
|
We reported many, many moons ago, here, that the follow up to Shaun of the Dead from Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg would be a Great British action movie called Hot Fuzz; something they described as "the UK equivalent of Hard Boiled or Desperado – but very, very English".
Says Edgar, "We’re writing furiously, so this is the last distraction. The Sony Ericsson Empire Awards represent the end of the Shaun campaign in a sense. It's a very high-level distraction to have, I'm not complaining in the slightest, but we really need to knuckle down."
So why the delay? Well, since Shaun of the Dead came out, Pegg and Wright have been busy jetting around the world, befriending Tarantino and Kevin Smith (the four of them were seen during the evening snuggling in corners and giggling like schoolgirls) and, crucially, not writing their next comedy masterpiece.
"I have some cameos coming up, in Hitchhikers and Land of the Dead," says Edgar. "Whether I'll make the finished cut in either of them I have no idea, but…In Land of the Dead me and Simon are both zombies. That was jolly good fun. We were over there for a week, which was cool, so we were hanging out with George (Romero). We made him a special Shaun of the Dead badge, as a thank you for his films. We sent it to him and he'd worn it every day on the shoot. When we went to see him on set he had the badge on and it was really weathered, because he'd been wearing in through four weeks of night shoots, so that was quite weird. So if you see any pictures of him on the set look out for the Shaun badge!"
Hmm, it seems all this hobnobbing with their transatlantic counterparts has delayed matters, but Simon too promises to put things right. "Edgar and myself are about to go off into the countryside and try to do the main body of the writing, and we've managed to get Nick Frost who's very expensive now."
Just how expensive? We asked Nick himself.
"Twelve figures! A twelve figure salary!"
So next time he'll be arriving in a private helicopter?
"A helicopter chiselled out of a massive diamond, so you can see where the money's going. British cinema is on the up!"
Ladies and gentlemen, you heard it hear first. And remember, if you should see Simon Pegg or Edgar Wright on the street from this day forth, you must chivvy them back to their typewriters so they can get back to work! The campaign for Shaun of the Dead is over – the countdown to Hot Fuzz starts here. |
