| 14 March 2005 | On The QT Tarantino accepts the Icon of the Decade award |
|
He's thrown dogs in reservoirs, pulped fiction and killed Bill. Despite making a grand total of only five films (and that's counting Kill Bill twice), Quentin Tarantino has had a hell of a lot of influence on the films we see. Why, he single-handedly relaunched John Travolta on an unsuspecting world, made fractured storylines all the rage and caused a run on the Chanel nail varnish worn by Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction (Rouge Noir, in case you're wondering). So it should be no surprise that Empire awarded Tarantino with the special Icon of the Decade prize at the 2005 Sony Ericsson Empire Awards, created in honour of the Awards' 10th anniversary this year.
Regular Tarantino collaborator Michael Madsen presented the director with the award, which Tarantino accepted in his usual ebullient fashion. "The fact that England has embraced me as one of their own and the fact that the British press, that Empire magazine and the Empire readers have embraced me as one of their own is really cool. There's just no other word for it; it's just really cool. I wanna thank y'all and I wanna thank the Empire readers and I wanna thank Empire, which actually just happens to be my favourite movie magazine in the world. I promise you I would not be saying that if it were not the truth because to say that about a movie magazine that is like my religion alright? I would never say that under any circumstances, but this is my favourite movie magazine in the world, alright?"
Oh stop, we're blushing! "My second favourite is Film Comment but this is my favourite…So thank you very, very much and I hope to give you at least 15 more years of movies that hopefully will get your dick hard just as much as the first ones."
Well, er, let's hope so. Meanwhile, for all those of you who admire Quentin's taste in films – and let's face it, the guy has seen enough to know what he's talking about – here's his rundown of last year's must-see films for you to plan your viewing around. "Well, my favourite film of last year was Shaun Of The Dead, and after that was The Passion Of The Christ, and after that …I saw a lot of terrific movies last year. I loved Team America, Harold And Kumar Go To White Castle, Before Sunset, The Incredibles. I loved the Korean film OldBoy, Fahrenheit 9/11. There's also this Russian science fiction movie called Nightwatch that's amazing – I saw a lot of fantastic movies."
All worthy recommendations, especially Shaun, whose Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright swiftly formed a mutual admiration society with Tarantino and also Kevin Smith. But what about Quentin's reading material? Sure, he said kind things about our own publication onstage, but did he really mean it? Is this true love? Or was he just enjoying the free bar? We grabbed QT again just to check that he really, really liked us.
"You guys are definitely my favourite film magazine, actually. From the point that I started reading you guys in '92, it was like, 'Ohmigod, this magazine is so cool' It's really incredibly literate about filmmaking and it's just so funny, and not in this catty, let's-put-everybody-down kinda way. If you make fun of people, you're making fun of them as film fans, so it's really cool."
And he also seemed to thoroughly enjoy the awards themselves. "Any award ceremony where you can go and you can cuss and let it out all hang out is always fun." Which is exactly our opinion too! We’re made for each other! Quentin, Empire will meet you on top of the Empire State Building in six months' time and then we can fall into each other's arms and run away and get married on a mountaintop somewhere, OK? Just don't run off with Simon and Edgar in the meantime- Quentin? Simon! Edgaaaar! Damn you!
