Heathers Director And Star Reunite Ryder and Lehmann go again

If you haven't seen Heathers you are, frankly, missing out on one of the finest black comedies of the 80s. A tale of high-school rivalries that get seriously out of hand, it's got murder, mayhem, Christian Slater wearing a black trench coat and the sharpest script this side of David Mamet. Now star Winona Ryder is reuniting with director Michael Lehmann, in the hopes of rekindling that ol' black magic after her long absence from lead roles during that whole messy Saks affair.
The new film is called Mary Warner, but we're guessing she's no relation to the entertainment giants. This Mary is a slacker actress who embarks on a series of life-changing adventures after mistakenly eating her stoner roommate's pot filled brownies.
"It's more like a dysfunctional Ferris Bueller's Day Off than a stoner movie," said Lehmann. "It is a good choice for Winona, who hasn't really done comedy since Heathers and is very good at it." We’re sure that anyone who has seen Mr Deeds would agree with the first part of that sentiment anyhow.
Lehmann's form has been patchy since Heathers (40 Days And 40 Nights, anyone? Anyone?) Still, he's done good work on TV, and perhaps he just needs a break. What's more, this sounds like Winona's returning to her roots — the black comedy of Heathers and the slacking of Reality Bites — which can only be a good thing. Right? Mary Warner begins shooting in January. |
