The Action Men
John Woo meets Tom Clancy

A large "thwack" sound was heard around Hollywood this morning as a thousand executives slapped their foreheads in unison and shouted "Why didn't I think of this first?" It's a match made in heaven – John Woo, the filmmaker behind a thousand (or so it seems) action / espionage thrillers will direct Rainbow Six, the latest film based on a book by Tom Clancy, author of a thousand (or so it seems) action / espionage bestsellers

Clancy's four films so far have been based around his character Jack Ryan, sometime Marine and CIA analyst and all-round do-gooder. This new film, however, would focus on his other lead, John Clark, a CIA agent who occasionally crops up in the Ryan books (especially the later books including Debt of Honor and Executive Orders) but has his own series.

Rainbow Six sees Clark leads several CIA colleagues to England, where they plan to create a multinational force to combat terrorism. The elite squad has initial successes against terrorist threats, but Clark becomes suspicious when Russian agents start to show a little too much interest in its activities.

In The Sum of All Fears, the last Jack Ryan book to be filmed, the Clark character was played by Liev Schreiber, but there are rumours that the studio might go for a bigger name for the role in this film. Frankly, we thought Schreiber was rather good, and after The Manchurian Candidate comes out he'll be higher-profile than ever, but we'll bring you casting news as we get it.
