Impractical Magic Kidman ready to be Bewitched?

Nicole Kidman is close to signing on for the lead role in Bewitched, the big screen adaptation of the sixties TV series. Kidman would play Samantha, a housewife, mother and witch, famous chiefly for her domestic mishaps and occasional broomstick rides.
Old School’s Will Ferrell has apparently signed on as Samantha’s husband and stooge Darrin, after early contender Jim Carrey dropped out. Ferrell and Kidman are quite clearly not the most obvious of romantic pairings - but then neither were Spencer Tracey and Katherine Hepburn. Certainly Ferrell’s star seems to be rising fast after Elf, and Kidman remains at the top of her game, so the pieces may yet fall into place.
Written and directed by romantic comedy stalwart Nora Ephron, filming is scheduled to begin in April. There is no news yet on the casting of Samantha’s meddling mother Endora, nor any details about the plot, but if you imagine that it will feature a variety of spells gone wrong and Darrin being transformed into an animal / vegetable / domestic appliance, you probably won’t be too far off the mark.
After serious, not to say gloomy, films in 2003, Kidman seems keen to return to the comedic talents she hinted at in To Die For and Moulin Rouge; first in next year’s The Stepford Wives and then in this classic comedy update. However, to do the role justice, Oscar winner Kidman faces her biggest challenge yet – learning Samantha’s trademark nose wiggle with which to cast her spells. "I had better get that down," she said on TV talk show The View. "It doesn't come that easy. I don't know how she [Elizabeth Montgomery, the original star of the series] did it, actually." |
