Update: Rossio on Stranger Tides

The Latest On Pirates 4 Origins

Pirates screenwriter Terry Rossio has revealed more details about the return of Jack Sparrow in Pirates Of The Carribbean: On Stranger Tides after we recently spoke to him about the book of the same name by Tim Powers, revealed last month to have been optioned by Disney three years ago.

Speaking to The LA Times, Tim Powers said, "I've watched all the movies several times, of course, and I think the clear thing they would use is the trip to the Fountain of Youth."

"My main character doesn't overlap with Jack Sparrow at all [in personality or circumstance]; they're totally different characters. I suppose they might overlap the Geoffrey Rush character Barbossa and Blackbeard. The only thing I feel certain they will hold on to is the Fountain of Youth since they telegraphed that at the end of the last movie."

Terry Rossio explains Disney's move to option the book and the story behind the new film, saying, "We wanted to do a story about Blackbeard and the Fountain of Youth, and Tim Powers wrote a book about Blackbeard and the Fountain of Youth... it just turns out that to do that story you would need that book. It's a brilliant and Tim Powers is an amazing writer - and it's a great title. It allows us to draw material from that universe and his expertise."

The question remains, was it based on it or not?

"I don't know if its proper to say it's based on it but there are enough common elements to think that the book had to be optioned to us to reasonably proceed along that story line."

The Keira Knightley-less Pirates is still pencilled in for a July 2011 release, Fountain Of Youth and all.

I am reading the book at the moment. I reckon it could almost be a prequel to the 3 films. The main chracter in the book is Jack Shandy, circumstances mean he goes from being an honest main to being a pirate. Changing his name along the way. easily enough to see how this could be changed to Jack Sparrow ... Read More

Tide Is High But I'm Holding On (For The Script)
Oh no, so we won't have Keira Knightley sticking her chin out and pouting for the whole movie like a 2 year old who didn't get sweets? GREAT! (Even though she's gorgeous posh totty). Everyone seems to rave about this book, a good sign. The sequels lost direction, basing the script on this apparently excellent book might steer the franchise back onto the right track. ... Read More
