He-Man Vs Barbie! Mattel movies a-go-go Source: Variety
Warners and Mattel recently parted ways over their Masters of the Universe movie, and it seems that Sony has picked up the baton. Meanwhile, Barbie is set to star in her own film, joining Hot Wheels, Max Steel, Major Matt Mason and a new line of Universal monster toys on Mattel's movie roster. You want toys? You got 'em.
The projected new He-Man movie will be built again from scratch since Warners retain the rights to the screenplays produced for Joel Silver. Unsurprisingly, the story is about a prince who becomes a warrior and battles Skeletor for his homeland of Eternia. No new writers have yet been assigned, but the new producers for Sony are reported to be Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch of Escape Artists, who were behind Knowing and The Taking of Pelham 123. So they know the action, and they know the sci-fi fantasy, and they know the PG-13. Interesting.
Barbie on the other hand, is being set up at Universal, with producer Laurence Mark, who was most recently behind Julie and Julia. The ditzy Barbie doll is, of course, the butt of many a joke in Toy Story 2, but she's never had her own film before (other than DTV cartoons), despite having, apparently, "99% global brand awareness". Why? "She wasn't ready," says Mattel honcho Richard Dickson. Universal are now on the lookout for writers for the family-friendly live action movie.
Barbie is no longer just a doll. She's an "intellectual property". We blame those Transformers.

Venger from Dungeons & Dragons was another good one!
Such a damn shame the film was so daft! Venger was scary - in fact there's quite a few moments in 80's toons that were not for little kids - all the greater for it!! ... Read More
There's no reason at all that He-Man can't be a properly good movie as long as it's done right.

If most people thought it was 80's trash then the DVD sales and action figure sales wouldn't be so high.
Though I'm sure folks who call it 80's trash (forgetting the 90's He-man and the Emmy award wining 2002 series) are into things far more intellectually highbrow, like Star Wars or something.
Masters of the Universe inspired a generation of creative types. Calling it trash ain't gonna change that. ... Read More

Yes the 80's Masters movie was a bit rubbish but I think folks need to remember the palava the makers had when doing the movie. The biggest being the big allocated budget been taken away. Here's are some indications of the what the movie was MEANT to be:

This is a no brainer - Barbie will be Legally Blonde meets Confessions of Shopaholic, that is, shallow girl makes good and wins Kens' heart. He-Man i am psyched for - as long as they give him a badass Viking edge. Cringer is the only challage, but that will hopefully be over shadowed by how awesome Battle Cat is.
