The project was originally mooted at Sony in the 1990s, but was revived more recently by Warner Bros. with names like Stephen Norrington, Jon Peters, Ruairi Robinson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Gary Whitta and Andrew Lazar all attached at various points in one capacity or another.
It's due to relocate the story from neo-Tokyo to Manhattan (neo-Manhattan?) and initial reports suggested two films, but it's such a colossally expensive proposal (some estimates put it north of $300m) that Warners will want to be very sure of their investment before work starts in earnest.
Things had gone ominously quiet of late, but Collider's man is confident that the movie is still very much a priority for the studio, and could go before cameras next year, for a 2011 release. Fingers crossed then, but we'll believe it when we see it.

Why would this be suited to live action? The story suited the animation process and no amount of CGI would be nearly as impressive as the visuals displayed in the original. Leave it well alone please.
ome on! The motorbike chase, the destruction of Neo-Tokyo, the army deploying Sol, the final face-off in the Stadium, Tetsuo's transformation - the anime's packed full of incredible scenes that would be owinge action. I also seem to recall an awesome ... Read More

Akira is my favourite movie ever and a US live-action verion just feels me with dread. Reading it was going to cost north of $200 million during the breakfast creal name The Credit Crunch I was glad that it was likely to be dropped due to the expense. Reading that it's still on I am gutted. Akira is Japan, it's culture, , attitude is vital to it's story, it's characters and it's style. New Manhattan, give me a break. Let's this be like the Speilberg/Will Smith attempt in remaking Oldboy and just... Read More
Just saw District 9 this weekend and if they got Blomkamp on board my enthusiasm would be greatly increased. To be honest I'd personally rather not see it go to someone like Spielberg. I know he's made some great films but I feel like his better films these days are his dramas. His big budget fare has been boring and safe for quite a while for me. I know I'm going to get blasted for that but War Of The Worlds and Indy 4 lacked both coherence and the small character details that used to set him ... Read More
I reckon Donnie Darko should play Kaneda and Frodo should play Tesuo.
If you watch the end of LOTR when he is at the edge of the pit claiming the ring as his own and looking at Samwise, you can see he has a bit of a tetsuo crazy look about him. hehe.

Why people are suprised/dismayed by this is beyond me, of course it was and more so like any adaptation expect it to not be EXACTLY like the Manga version (especially the climax). I am (nervously) looking forward to this, so long as they get a good script, director, cast and crew in place, which from the talk of $300m budgets and time being taken to green light the project it seems they are giving every consideration to, I am optimistic and very very intrigued. ...
