Disney Buys Marvel For $4 Billion

Disney Buys Marvel For $4 Billion

It may be a Bank Holiday, but someone out there is still working, because it's been announced today that Disney has bought Marvel Entertainment for about $4 billion dollars.

DC, of course, has long been owned by Warner Bros., so this potentially gives Marvel a similar studio partnership. The details of the deal have not yet been made public, and have to be confirmed under an antitrust review and by Marvel's shareholders, but there could be an eventual end to the deals with multiple studios that Marvel has made in the past. At the very least, expect to see new Marvel rides in Disney theme parks instead of their rivals.

Whether this is all a good thing or a bad thing remains to be seen. The current deals with multiple studios has allowed Marvel to plan several movies a year over the last couple of years, which might not have been possible had the whole library been based at one studio (given how much big comic-book franchises cost to make). We'll bring you more on this as we get it. Unless what we get is Mickey Mouse in a Spidey suit, cause we're totally keeping that for ourselves.

Maybe we won't have anymore Spiderman films inflicted on us! If so, this can only be a good thing. I liked 1 & 2 (although it was too long), but after the appalling Spiderman 3, I don't ever want to see an emo Peter Parker in a polo-neck playing the piano. Never Ever Again :p ... Read More

Really?!?!
It just amazes me how a company that is made up of nothing more than fictional characters and stories can sell for $4 billion. True Disney is a company of the same nature, but when that kind of money is being exchanged in a global recession, and the sales to be made on it are nothing more than merchandising and media distribution. It just seems crazy how such a market can be valued so high, and it's because of us being such a consumer market. ... Read More

Pixar has not suffered with it's association with Disney and with John Lasseter at the helm I'm sure Marvel will run as it has been. I think this is a great move and will probably make the Avengers movie a bigger possibility. More good than bad I think. ... Read More

What!
This is shocking to say the least. If they were bought by Sony that wouldn't be as shocking but, Disney? Ok whatever, just hope this don't mess things up with future Marvel projects that are being turned into movies. Example: The Captain America movie, The Avengers movie Spider-Man 4 & 5 etc... ... Read More

Disney buys Marvel...say that again? Disney buys Marvel. Never mind the price tag...I am not sure if this is a good move...I thought Marvel were moving places with their slate of new movies to be released in the next couple of years or so...business wise I am sure it is a brilliant idea...but in terms of movie success and such...well let's see what they come up with. I Just hope Marvel have clauses in the contract should Disney fuck things up which they do not want to do... ... Read More
