Wolverine Sequel Goes Into Development Japan-set story planned, and more
In perhaps the least surprising news ever to follow an $85 million opening weekend, work has begun on a sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and star Hugh Jackman is also considering a whole raft of other films, including thriller Drive, Personal Security, and a new adaptation of musical Carousel. He'll also be returning to Broadway in Houdini.
Let's take those one-by-one, shall we? The Wolverine sequel is - chorus it with us now - to be set in Japan, and will focus on the samurai / Yakuza storyline of the comics, wherein Wolverine trains in the way of the samurai in order to control his feral nature, and falls in love with Mariko Yashida, heir to a Yakuza family.
But that's not all. Jackman's also considering a role in Drive, about a racing driver who moonlights as a getaway man, and Personal Security, about a tough New York detective forced into bodyguard duty for a spoiled teenage heiress (we know which of those we'd rather see him play, incidentally, and it's the former).
Meanwhile Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel has been in development hell for aaaages at Fox 2000, but is apparently now "a priority", with Jackman in line to play Billy Bigelow, a carousel "barker" and the romantic lead of the story despite criminal tendencies.
And then there's the musical in his planned return to stage - Houdini's based on music by Danny Elfman, lyrics by David Yazbek and Hairspray's Jack O'Brien directing. It's hard to get past The Prestige when talking about Jackman and stage magic, but he does like to keep his hand in with musicals inbetween mutton-chopped mutant outings, and this sounds like a good fit.
So, if you were Jackman, which of these options would you be prioritising? And which mutants, if any, would you like to see in a Wolverine sequel?
No way does the next wolverine movie need 'new mutants'.... stick to what works... spider-man 3 did'nt pan out because of how many characters got squeezed into the movie, likewise with wolverine origins, with all those new characters, we did'nt get to see the wolverine that exists in the x-men movies.... the wolverine that we were looking forward to see. so I say one Wolverine... one Japan... one villain, capiche? ... I always liked Wolverine's friendship with Morph in the cartoon - if he had a (non-annoying) sidekick like that (not played by Shia LeBoef) that would be cool. And enemies? Silver Samurai, played by Ken Watanabe. ... Read More
I'm happy he movie didn't flop and they've got a 2nd shot at make the Wolverine movie we deserve
Lets have wolverine actually kill a few more people this time though. And bring in gambit. No need for many other mutants. Especially now deadpools getting his own film. ... Read More
I think the Wolverine sequel definitely with more mutants. Carousel is going to be cheesy, the original was and I can't see it being improved upon without adding even more cheese. I think Hugh: just pick something with a really good story and maybe with less special effects... not sure about the singing though... jury is out on that one. ... Read More
Wolverine 2 sounds like a plan, going to see the new one in a few hours. However, I wish Jackman would be given better roles after the amazing "The Prestige". "Swordfish" was pretty good too, but to be fair, he'd do alright making a musical I think because he seems to have a lot of female fans. ... Read More
I have to admit, I was walking into the cinema with a little bit of reluctance given Empire's 2 star review of the film, but once I saw it, I disagreed with Empire. Yes it wasn't brilliant, but with this propsed sequel, they can improve on it. And Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool was a stroke of genius. Not exactly as I thought he'd be, but brilliant nonetheless. Some fanboys will just complain for the sake of complaining. I can't wait for the Japanese set sequel, and the individual Deadpool film will ... Read More
Sounds good that the second movie is being set in Japan. They obviously have to include the legend that is Silver Samurai (It's all good if he's Kenuichio Harada in the movie) and no doubt they'll find a way of including Sunfire too. On the other hand, I wonder how many cameos from the X-Men universe will be included ... Omega Red or Beast? How about altering Cable's story to include him?! ... Read More
Haven't seen this yet - and the mixed reviews haven't put me off.
The film itself might not be any great shakes but at least the healthy box office means that there'll be more Superhero films in the pipe line. The Spirit was absolute dreck and deserved to sink without trace, Punisher Warzone was pretty good but the lousy box office means there won't be another - and Watchmen was sublime - but as usual - the Americans didn't seem to get it.
If Mr. Jackman wants to carry on making Wolverine mov... Read More
