This shot was taken during a few moments of down time on the set, and shows Tintin himself (Jamie Bell) and Captain Haddock (Andy Serkis) talking with Spielberg. You'll have to check out the issue itself for more on the film, including more pictures, and more on the cast involved (notably Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as Thompson and Thomson).
Steven Moffat, Joe Cornish and Edgar Wright wrote the screenplay, based on Hergé's massively popular books. The film's not due out until 2011, by which time CGI magic will have replaced those dots and greenscreens with pure awesomeness.
For more on the film, lots more from Spielberg and interviews and shoots with names so big we can't print them here for fear of completely blowing your mind, pick up the 20th birthday issue of Empire when it hits newsstands next Thursday - or you can pre-order your copy here.
i'd love to see some stop motion animation for the new district 9 film! its ok with sinbad and classic monsters like that but i'd like to see how some of the alienstrict 9 would look in stop motion...
saying that, has anyone seen 'Bad Taste' - one of Peter Jacksons very early, very low budget films? Thats about the quality you can expect! I'll take the CGI thanks ... Read More
I agree with Rich on this one. Having been raised on the pure cinematic gold that Spielberg is capable of, I really want that guy back for this. Was never a huge fan of the comics but it is a good fundamental building block from which to create a great action adventure on. I was truly appalled by ‘Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’ and it saddened me to see Spielberg produce such a hackish piece of cinema. But I do attribute a large portion of the blame to Lucas on that one and remain fai... Read More

Well you are right in the middle of the problem, "it's essentially an animated film", and I say no.
Motion Capture is NOT animation.
It's Motion Capture, it's a technology that captures people moving in a green space, it's not animation, and I wish the movie websites could repeat that a bit more often instead of calling everything 3D "animation".
Spielberg has an animation studio, it's called Dreamworks, and he had a way to do it as a real animation project. He ... Read More
No one really said the Herge should be blamed, just seemed like a few people felt the comic was beneath Spielberg & Friends, that they shouldn't be wasting their time on something like this.
I was just trying to say that even if the movie version sucks all over the place, that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the material.
Or something along those lines. But yeah, Tintin is good stuff.

The whole point is there won't be dead eyes. It's essentially an animated film that will be a Herge strip come to life, and the mo-cap was just so Spielberg could find a way to direct his first animated film (he was just going to produce it before Jackson gave his proposal).

...I haven't been excited about a Spielberg film, or a Jackson one for that matter. I had no interest in reading Tintin when I was younger, and I have no interest in seeing it on the big screen and I can't understand why either of them would put so much effort into this. ... Read More
The Tintin universe is wonderful, filled with oportunities for classic adventure, comedy, action, all the sort of things Spielberg originally got famous for (whether or not it's what he does best, could maybe be discussed), so I understand why he's been trying to get this off the ground for so many years. There's ancient treasures, a crazy scientist, globe trotting etc etc...
I'm not saying it's a slam dunk to make it come alive. There's a certain deliberate emptiness to the main character, w... Read More
