Exclusive: Gemma Arterton Talks Titans

As revealed exclusively in this month’s issue of Empire – now on sale, fact fans – Gemma Arterton is set to star as the demi-goddess Io in Louis Leterrier’s forthcoming remake of Clash Of The Titans. Last night, though, Arterton showed up at the Jameson Empire Awards to pick up the Best Newcomer award, and was full of more hot Titans tidbits.

“My part is... the coolest part,” she laughed. “Io’s not in the original film. Perseus falls in love with her and then [CENSORED FOR TINY SPOILER]. It’s a really great part.”

According to Arterton, though, Io’s presence isn’t the only thing about the movie, which is, of course, a reimagining of the 1981 Harry Hamlin ‘classic’ in which Perseus embarks upon an epic quest, part of which involves killing the evil Medusa and the dreaded Kraken.

“The script is very different,” she continued. “Obviously the story is the story, but it’s much more about Perseus’ mission, and how he deals with being the son of Zeus, and things like that, so it feels a little more about him, and about the issues around that.”

Sam Worthington is on board as Perseus (pick up the new issue of Empire for exclusive quotes from the Avatar/Terminator Salvation star), while Liam Neeson was reputed to have been offered the role of Zeus. However, given his current tragic circumstances, it’s not yet known if he will commit to the role.

And the news that Arterton isn’t playing Princess Andromeda would seem to leave the door ajar for a hot young starlet to storm in and claim the role made famous by, erm, Judi Bowker in the original.

As for the delightful and down-to-earth Arterton, though, the Clash of the Titans role means that, along with Prince Of Persia, she’s set fair to dominate the summer of 2010. In fact, we’re having a hard time thinking of a major movie that she’s not signed up for…

Your Comments
As someone very well informed on Greek Mythology, I really would like to know what Io has to do in a Perseus movie!?! Clash of the Titans was twisted, but acceptable...but Ralph Fiennes as Hades? I mean, how twisted can a movie get? I don't mean to say I won't like, I'm too eager to see the poster outside the Maltese cinemas...but I fear the myth will get out of proportion! I hope for the best... ... Read More
