Tales Of The Black Freighter Clip
Exclusive: see the Watchmen spin-off

Tales Of The Black Freighter Clip

OK, so you've seen Watchmen - but you still don't have the full story.  Tales of the Black Freighter, the comic-within-a-comic for Alan Moore's graphic novel, has also been film-ised for DVD release - and we have an exclusive clip from its 'making of' - with footage from the film itself as well.

The story of the Black Freighter follows a marooned mariner (voiced by Gerard Butler) whose crew was brutally slaughtered by the denizens of the titular dark-coloured ship*. Morbidly convinced that the Black Freighter is headed to pillage his home town, the mariner (unnamed in the book and film; although onscreen he's a ship's captain) sets off to attempt to warn his people. Be warned: things get kinda gory.

Tales of the Black Freighter is out on DVD on April 6, and includes fake-doc Under the Hood (based on the fictitious autobiography of a Watchmen supporting character: this thing is layered).

*Ships like this have denizens rather than crewmembers.

RE:
I saw this the other day and thought Butlers narration was the best part. The animation is alright (although could've been better) and it's a perfectly serviceable adaptation of what's in the comic. It's not a particularly great 25 minutes though because out of context it's not a particularly great story. I certainly wouldn't recommend buying it (unless the under the hood stuff is brilliant) because, although it's a faithful and well made adaptation, as a stand alone tale it's pretty average. ... Read More

Waited so long for this and I can't wait to get it on April 6, the making of is great and just to hear Gerard Butler's haunting voice will be good stuff. Once again, can't wait! ... Read More
