PGA Announces Best Feature Nominations

Not content with making enough money to bail out several national economies, The Dark Knight has scored a significant nomination from the Producers Guild Of America, joining Slumdog Millionaire, Frost/Nixon, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Milk on the shortlist for best pic.

The PGA award will be a significant barometer for The Dark Knight’s chances at the Oscars: 12 of 19 PGA winners have gone on to win best picture at the Academy Awards, including No Country For Old Men last year.

Although overlooked for best film, there’s consolation for the wonderful Wall-E which is nominated for animated feature, alongside Bolt and Kung Fu Panda.

The three documentary nominations are Man On Wire, Standard Operating Procedure and Trouble The Water.

PGA winners are announced on January 24. Can the Dark Knight win? And will Chris Nolan’s masterpiece walk away with the best picture Oscar on February 22? Post your thoughts below…

Nah
I don't reckon The Dark Knight stands a chance of winning Best Picture, The Awards jury are always sniffy about comic book films. I hope it does win, but if not the Slumdog Millionaire deserves it ... Read More

Waltz with Bashir?
I know it's animated but it's essentially a documentary, is this on some sort of technicality or do they just not rate it? Even for best animation it's seemingly missed out as well... very stranged. ... Read More

The Jackson case
I said it once and I'll say it again: if Peter Jackson gets an Oscar for Return of the King then Chris Nolan MUST get one for The Dark Knight. Period. ... Read More

Everything is far in love and war
i think every one of the big movies should win one award each, like the dark knight wins best film, milk wins best director, frost/nixon should win best actor and so on. This is better because it means everyone gets an award ... Read More

Arguing about whether a film 'deserves' a nomination is pointless because what constitutes an award worthy film is arbitrary. You might as well just cut to the chase and say what you thought of the film itself. I personally would like to see it nominated so the Academy would at least acknowledge that, yes, this film has been (in the US at least) something of a cultural phenomenon. And guess what, it got great reviews too. ... Read More

Well the dark knight could win: Best scor, best directopr, best adapted screenplay, best visual effect, makeup design, best supporting actor, best actor, if we want to get technical best film in a foreign language for japaneese dub ... Read More

Sending a message
I'd love to see The Dark Knight pick up Best Picture, because if nothing else it would send the message that just because a film has its origins in comics rather than classic text novels, it can still be a masterpiece of cinema. It'd also be a statement that the "Superhero" genre doesn't have to be effects heavy popcorn fodder, but can be a real piece of artistry ... Read More
