Disney Bails On Third Narnia Film
Dawn Treader's future now all at sea

Disney Bails On Third Narnia Film

Cold tidings for Caspian this morning, as Walt Disney Studios announced that they will not be co-producing and co-financing the adaptation of CS Lewis' The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the third of the Narnia films. This leaves Walden Media, the other big force behind the films, to find another partner if the film is indeed to hit screens in 2010.

Disney cited "budgetary and logistical" reasons for the move, which probably translates as "it's very expensive, and the last one didn't do so brilliantly at the box office". Prince Caspian made a hair under $420 million at the worldwide box office, compared to $745 million for its predecessor The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe

Prince Caspian also cost in the region of $200 million, and given that The Voyage of the Dawn Treader would present more logistical difficulties given its sea-borne nature, the studio presumably thought it was a bit of a gamble - and the recent failure of other non-Potter kids fantasy films like The Golden Compass may further have put the wind up them. Disney's withdrawal also casts doubt on the involvement of talent like planned director Michael Apted and screenwriter Steven Knight.

But all may not be lost! Walden Media works closely with Fox on most of its productions, so it may yet persuade Fox to step in. Watch this space for further news.

RE: Disney Bails On Third Narnia Film
i think like most other teen fantasy book adaptations in recent memory the movies were rushed and ill conceived in nature trying to get the harry potter or lord of the rings audiences money this was Disney's almost cynical response to that trend and come across as such if they were serious and wanted to build a franchise then they should have hired a good director and put in extra effort to ensure the films were made to last ... Read More

RE: Disney Bails On Third Narnia Film
I meant to also add this bit (cant find the edit button), about the Golden Compass!   That film was a complete distaster purely because of how it was directed and cut. I have never read the GC books, and I was completely lost and annoyed during most of the film as a result. They jumped between so many storylines or points in the film without any explanation of how they reached that point, that it was frustrating.   A perfect example of this is the bit where the young girl... Read More

RE: Disney Bails On Third Narnia Film
What about the Harry Potter books and films?   Those started out pretty bad and started off just riding the excitement of the books and were very childish to begin with. But they progressively got better and the last one was really good. The actors have grown up and learnt how to act, the special effects obviously pay off, everyone is just sure of their characters and parts in the story and the maturity of the films have improved.   Those started out very childish a... Read More

It's to be expected, how many books are there, five? It's all about the box office people, I think a lot of series/trilogies are gonna end up this way - it shouldn't be allowed, it's like publishing an unfinished book!!The Golden Compass for example being a dead duck is also a pity ... Read More

RE: Disney Bails On Third Narnia Film
Too bad!!   Prince Caspain was one of the very few great film of 2008, and probably the one good live-action-Disney films of these days... I really liked it. Both Disney Narnia films were absolutely great.   Now I am worried about the third film. Though, the book is fantastic by the way. ... Read More

RE: Disney Bails On Third Narnia Film
I have to agree with freekedoutfish and KeithM in that Caspian miles better than the disappointing Wardrobe. after that initial misstep it looked as though the series had gotten back on track with the sequel so it's a real shame that Disney have bailed. I've heard rumours that Fox might step up to the plate so fingers crossed for that and I hope that they keep that cast as the kids who played Lucy and Edmond are by far the better actors. ... Read More

RE: wardrobe had strong legs, caspian broke them...
But, I'll try... quote]ORIGINAL: lovegrove7196 The first trouble was attempting to ride the wave of the first film. 'Wardrobe' was popular because it had been done so many times before, people knew it's name. But Caspian was trying to ride that same wave and failed because not many people knew of this story. can't think of a better reason to make the film than that.  Who wants to see the same crap over and over again?  The sheep maybe, but it's a sad state of affairs if we use that... Read More
