In terms of credited gigs, screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie has never been what you might call prolific. The forthcoming release of Valkyrie will make it four films in fifteen years, along with Public Access, The Usual Suspects and his directorial debut, Way Of The Gun.
But he’s clearly got a bee under his bonnet, as evidenced by today’s announcement that he has signed on to write and produce Champions, an adaptation of the cult British ‘60s TV show, for MGM – marking his second in development film for the studio.
Readers with long memories will know that Guillermo Del Toro (making his second appearance in an Empire news story today; here’s his first) has been attached to Champions for a while.
But Del Toro has got plenty on his plate already, so McQuarrie has come on to co-write the film, which follows a group of secret agents who are rescued from a plane crash by an advanced civilisation and given startling new abilities, and get it to the starting grid.
Champions is a "great premise with fascinating potential; I wanted to be involved from the moment Guillermo and I first discussed it," McQuarrie told Daily Variety.
Paula Wagner and Tom Cruise – with whom, of course, McQuarrie worked on Valkyrie – will produce Champions. They’re also producing The Monster Of Florence, which McQuarrie is also writing for MGM, and which may become a starring vehicle for Cruise.
