14 Films Up For Best Animation Oscar
Is Wall-E already the frontrunner?

14 Films Up For Best Animation Oscar
Define optimism: putting your film up against Wall-E in the race for a Best Animated Feature Oscar.

After all, we’re fairly certain that Pixar’s loveable little robot has it in the bag. Yet that hasn’t stopped studios of all shapes and sizes from putting forward thirteen animated films as contenders for the 2009 award.

Wall-E, of course, makes fourteen. And they are: Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, Kung-Fu Panda, Waltz With Bashir, The Tale Of Despereaux, Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears A Who!, Bolt, Delgo, Fly Me To The Moon, Igor, Dragon Hunters, $9.99, The Sky Crawlers, and Sword Of The Stranger.

Of that fourteen, only three films will actually be nominated when the announcements are made on January 22. And after that, of course, only one (Wall-E) can win (just give it to Wall-E now, we won’t say anything).

Mind you, we may be getting ahead of ourselves here. Although some of the other contenders would seem to be barking up the wrong tree (Igor? Seriously? Madagascar 2?), some of the films there will fancy their chances of causing an upset come next February.

Waltz With Bashir, for example, is a serious and stunning drama that could become this year’s Persepolis, while we’d put Kung-Fu Panda in there because it was just plain awesome.

But, at this point in time, we reckon it’s Wall-E’s Oscar to lose. If you disagree, of course, feel free to vent below.
Chris Hewitt

Wall-E Overrated?
as subversive as I feel... did anyone else think that it wasnt as great as Empire think it is...? Sure - animation was nex-gen mind blowing, but the plot was predictable, it was overlong, the narrative felt like i had been there before, the message was patronising and duplicitous (given the merchandising of Disney), poor script, lacking in real humour. I still preordered the DVD for the family - but really. It was a pretty uninvigorating 2.5 hours? ... Read More

No way on Mad 2, Wall-E will win for sure
No way on Madagascar 2, it's better than the original but that's not hard. The three noms will be Wall-E, Kung Fu Panda and Waltz With Bashir, betcha. RE: Madagascar 2
Waltz With Bashir o-ins, no doubt. After that, it's a four-way battle for the third spot between Panda e it's a return to form for Dreamworks), gon Hunters e it's foreign and sounds pretty decent), e of Despereaux delivers on its buzz) and Hears A Who! e the reviews were good). Everyone involved in To The Moone dreaming, though. Or tripping on hallucinogens. ... Read More

Madagascar 2
Has been very well received in America this weekend and beaten WALL-E's opening weekend gross... though I'm certain it won't win, it may oust Kung Fu Panda out of its nomination at least. I wouldn't be surprised if WALL-E was up for Best Film as well; Shrek was apparently a shoo-in for a nomination back in 2001 but, with the introduction of the Animated category, people promptly thought that a win there was perfectly suitable. WALL-E is still the best reviewed film of the year in America and I w... Read More

Also Bolt I'd say will be a contender to Pixar's long-held crown. Being Disney and all, you gotta give it a chance even if it's actually rubbish, which it doesn't look like being. so... 4 way fight. Though as much as it's likely to get a nomination, I don't think kung Fu Panda has much chance. Waltz however could take it purely for being a fully serious film that happens to be animated. probably depends on the mood of the voters at the time they vote. ... Read More

Strong year...but the robot leads the pack
Ok. Kung Fu Panda was so much fun. I absolutely adored the movie. It was 'plain awesomeness'. And I cannot wait to see 'Waltz'...it looks beautiful and amazing. I can't say much about the rest (no to igor and madagascar 2) but I dnt really see Bolt and Desperaux doing anything special. Horton packs little punch and has anyone ever heard of the other movies??? Wall-e was magnificence. ANd while KFP was entertaining, and visually strong, Wall-e's visuals are unprecidented. The first half an hou... Read More
