Aces Prequel Could Be Smokin'
Announces screenwriter Carnahan
Source: Joe Carnahan official

Aces Prequel Could Be Smokin'

Hold the front page, forget the new president, we've got an announcement that everyone has been waiting for. Yep, that's right, the Smokin' Aces prequel has been greenlit!

Writer/director Joe Carnahan made the momentous announcement on his official website:

Finally, some actual 'Smokin Aces' news. Universal has officially greenlit the prequel and we are underway. Cameos will abound. Trust me.

So cameos 'will abound' eh? Not surprising, given that the first film saw just about everyone wind up dead, which pretty much means that this movie would have to be a prequel.

So, looks like we can expect turns from the likes of The Piv (as the titular supergrass magician Buddy 'Aces' Israel), Ben Affleck's bail bondsman Jack Dupree, Ryan Reynolds' FBI agent Richard Messner and Alicia Keys' sharp shooting Georgia Sykes.

But we might also get some more insight now into the characters played by Jason Bateman, Peter Berg, Common and Ray Liotta, while we're waiting with bated breath to see if Chris Pine will reprise his role as the psychotic neo-Nazi Darwin Tremor. After all, the new Captain Kirk might not need to do this film, but given that Pine has a lot of respect for Carnahan, and was set to star in his proposed adaptation of James Ellroy's White Jazz, he might well want to do this for old time's sake.

Smokin' Aces was pretty much universally panned, and didn't bring in the big bucks, so rumours are already doing the rounds that the prequel will go straight to DVD. Carnahan seems committed though, so it could be ace. Or, indeed, smokin'.

Wouldn't mind it at all
After all, there are worse movies they could be adding prequels or sequels to. Remember when they threatened those Battlefield Earth sequels, prequels, and/or cartoon shows several years ago? AND YOU DON'T WANT THOSE NOW DO YOU!?!??! Although I will say that if it does go straight to video, at least still make it like a theatrical film. A lot of these DTV sequels have been limp d***, so to speak. (I'm looking at you, Joy Ride 2! But ur ok w/ me Wrong Turn 2!) ... Read More

there is only one reason to make this
and that is to make the movie they promised last time. Shoot 'em up proved to be the movie that smoking aces made itself out to be and they need to learn from that. was gutted when ryan 'hannibal king' reynolds turned in a serious performance. the whole premise was so absurd last time we may as well get some blade trinity style gagage from van wilder himself. ... Read More

RE: Aces Prequel Could Be Smokin'
"Cameos will be abound"? I'm sick of all these movies that think the more recognisable faces there are in the movie the better it is. Why not try concentrating on making an actual decent movie instead of spending far too much time and energy trying to shoe horn every character from the 1st movie into it.    Smokin Aces was average. Watched it once and didnt switch it off half way through so it mustve been okay. Not sure if theres any need for a prequel though....  ... Read More
