Bond Breaks Brit Box Office Records Quantum of Solace rules Friday Source: Variety
Friday was a good day for James Bond, as Quantum of Solace made its way straight to the top of the UK box office and smashed a few records along the way.
Yes, with £4.9m on its first day of release, Quantum of Solace has the highest Friday box-office ever, easily overtaking the previous holder, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. That said, the biggest single day opening ever is still Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, which took £5.3m on its opening day in 2004.
But it remains the case that Quantum of Solace performed brilliantly, taking 42% more than Casino Royale's opening day, and going on to make an impressive £14.45m at the UK box office, where it took a whopping 70% of all business this weekend. It also posted the highest ever opening for a Bond film in France, while its Swedish debut was the fourth-biggest ever in that country, behind The Return of the King, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Pirates of the Carbbean: At World's End.
So it's a good day for James Bond who, we imagine, would be stirred but not shaken by his success so far.
Despite the initial box ofice and Daniel Craig's brilliant turn, there's a powerful case for saying that this is absolutely the worst Bond film of the entire canon.
Enormous effort is made to keep the series fresh, and nobody wants to critizise something that is akin to sacred text, but the film stinks to high heaven in innumerable ways.
If I want to see a pretentious film, I'll go to my local art house; if I want to see bone crunching realism, I'll watch Matt Damon on DVD.

I never thought it would be as good as Casino Royale, and it wasn't. But as a Part II to that story, it more than succeeded. Bravo to all involved. And frankly, after this installment, it feels as if they'll now be able to bring more of the traditional Bond elements into the new world they've created, which might sate some of the moanier viewers. ... In some ways - mainly Daniel Craig's superb peformance, it's good., but overall it's the worst Bond film ever in that it's not a Bond film on it's on right. It's more like Casino Royale - The Deleted Scenes as because they rushed it through because of the writers strike it doesn't really have a plot. The reason why it's so short is because really it's a short paragraph that ends the revenge plot stretched out with a few duff action sequence (excepte the brilliant pre-credits car battle).. ... Couldn’t stand the film, IMO it was a good borne film, but as for a Bond film, well at least it wasn’t too long. There were a couple of good action scenes, however you can’t just relay on good action scenes to make a great movie. It had a very shallow story line that didn’t really develop, and I feel sorry for Daniel Craig as the script gave nothing for him to work on and left him leaping from roof top to car chase without any character development. Now all of this is in ... Read More

Good, but not as good as Casino Royale. On the other hand, it was showing in 4 screens at our local multiplex. An unprecedented amount in my memory at that location. ... Read More
