We Know What Harry Does Next Summer Potter VI moves back to July 09 Source: Variety
Bad news for all those with Harry Potter withdrawal symptoms (shaking wand arm, nargle infestation, butterbeer overdoses): Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince's release date has moved from the relatively close November 21 to the practically-an-age-away July 17 2009. We'll pause for a moment here for you to compose yourselves.
Feeling better? OK, now let us assure you, as we were in turn assured, that this is not the result of the film running into difficulties. Post-production is on schedule - in fact, the studio press release says it "was completed on time" (our itals) which suggests that it's locked and loaded and ready to go, just sitting in the Warners vault with cash occasionally crystalising out of thin air nearby from the sheer weight of its cosmic money-making potential.
The delay is due instead to the fact that the writers' strike left several big gaps in the summer '09 line-up, and rather than risk people finding something else to do than go to the cinema, the studios are rationing our film releases.
Jeff Robinov, head of Warner Bros Pictures, said that this would not affect the release schedule for The Deathly Hallows, work on which is proceeding in the meantime. "The studio's release plans for the two-part 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' will not be affected by this change. We know Harry Potter fans are eagerly anticipating seeing the final chapters unfold onscreen. In fact, the good news for them is that the gap will now be shortened between 'Half-Blood Prince' and the first part of 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.'"
Of course, the bad news is that the gap between Order of the Phoenix and The Half-Blood Prince comes in at more than two years. No wonder those fans have the nargles.
I'm still not over the fact that they did this. First giving the teaser trailer and not much later really teasing (well, that's an understatement...) with the news that the film has a 8 month delay. How can they do this...???? I was soooooo much looking forward to this film!!!! I think the theory about being next to quantum of solace and the release dates of the dvd are wright. It's all about the money hey...... ... Read More
Well I was truly shocked when I read this a week ago but have now discovered why WB have probably done this. Not only will it draw in movie goers in the summer but the DVD release will prob coincidentally coincide with christmas 2009 which means massive numbers will be brought for presents. If the film had been released this november then the DVD release would have been in a boring spring month! ... Read More
So, I've been thinking about this for the last couple of days and have finally brought myself to terms with the fact that there will be no HP this year. I am however puzzled as to why Warner left it so late to announce, if their decision 'was not taken lightly' then they must have been considering it for a while, in fact they must have realised that they would have a shortfall of films for summer 09 when the writers strike was taking place, i can only assume that this was when Warner must have d... i kind of agree with everyone else- i mean who the ruddy hell are we kidding?? Every Harry Potter fan(including me-obviously) out there is just as upset as iam- i mean at first i was thinking- why the delay?? and why Harry Potter- the best loved film in the industry- but after reading this- i am beginning to get tired of the strikes that these companies go through- the writers strike affected the Cannes film festival, causing numerous celebrities not to attend- (fair do's)- but i hate the fact ... I have been seething all weekend and cursing WB. I think it's a real kick in the teeth for the fans. I understand that WB are a company and are supposed to make money but let's face it..... Whoever is going to see it in July next year would have gone to see it in Nov. Although I am trying to think of a way to see the movie yet boycott the cinema.... Hmmm..... *shudders at the thought of piracy*

I get they want to string this particular cash cow out as long as they can (splitting a book that works perfectly well as one film in to two, anyone?), but it really does feel like they're taking the piss here. Real shame after the refreshing clean honesty of the books... even JK seems to have decided her fortune wasn't quite big enough.ote]
