JD Salinger Has Awful Taste In Movies Famed author reviews Indiana Jones
This isn't strictly news, but you might find it rather amusing. Reader Adam Newell just emailed us to let us know that there's a letter written by the author JD Salinger being auctioned on ebay. Now, Salinger wrote some fine works – Catcher In The Rye, particularly, remains required reading for anyone in their late teenage years – but the man is clearly less reliable when it comes to judging movies.
In the letter, written to his lover Janet Eagleson, Salinger says:
"I got hooked into seeing Raiders of the Lost Ark, which might be excused for its unwitty, unfunny awful socko-ness if it had been put together by Harvard Lampoon seniors"
Well, la-di-dah. You can see the full note here. You can even buy it if you've got a couple of thousand dollars sitting in your pocket.
Also in Things We Learned Today: JD Salinger isn't dead.

Big talk for a man who only managed one novel in his entire life ;) (A few short stories don't count) be like Spielerg stopping after his Columbo episode.oin
dunno, Spielberg's episode of Columbo wasn't one of the true classics of the 20th century...ke Raiders.

What I really want to see is a very brief summing up of why Indiana Jones is, as I am so frequently told, one of the greatest film franchises ever.
Anybody?
ecause it's grossly overrated. ... Read More

Witless my ass. one agreeing that Raider of the Lost Ark isn't a great film, well...you're all just a bunch of phonies. I'd like to punch each and everyone of you of your goddamn nosesif I don't see a whole load of socko-ness
in the new Indy film then I'll be goddamn pissed. Socko-ness is exactly what I ] to see in an Indy film.

But how credible is an author who includes this in his article
"Now, Salinger ome fine booksher In The Rye, particularly, remains required reading for anyone in their late teenage years" - my bold.
So come on Mr Richards - name 2 ich most of us don't mean republished and combined magazine stories!)
es, you totally got me. I counted Franny and Zooey as a book, when in fact it was a pair of stories written for The New Yorker and later assembled into a book (in whic... Read More
Well, it proves that JD Salinger was alive in 1981. He is a notorious reclusive, refusing interviews, photographs, etc. Sean Connery's character in "Finding Forrester" was based on him. Also, Salinger has so far refused to sell the film rights for Catcher in the Rye - so no Catcher film, which is a shame, for it would make an excellent movie!
And hey, people: can't you read Olly's tone in this article? ;) That's right! ... Read More
bit of a bad taste article olly? Salinger's not dead? Why? Should he be?
Indiana was good fun. Kind of like the Matrix movies. But hardly awe-inspiring. Here's a bet - Indy 4 gets 5 stars from Empire, regardless of how mediocre it really is. Remember Phantom Menace? Or your Alexander review?
