Ryan Gosling To Play Jack Ryan?
Plans to relaunch the character
Source: Moviehole

Ryan Gosling To Play Jack Ryan?
This is one of the stranger rumours we've heard recently. Moviehole is reporting that Paramount is planning to relaunch the Jack Ryan franchise, which has already included The Hunt For Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger and The Sum of All Fears, with Ryan Gosling taking over the role vacated by Alec Baldwin and then Harrison Ford and then Ben Affleck.

Now, we think Gosling is an absolutely incredible actor and welcome his inclusion in anything. But we don't get the desire to relaunch Jack Ryan, particularly since this new film is not going to be based on a Tom Clancy novel. Director Philip Noyce reportedly told Moviehole a new film is in the works, he would not be involved and Gosling would take the role. He said the title is By Any Means Necessary and is an original script.

Does Jack Ryan really mean anything to anyone, filmically? Is he a character to carry a franchise or could any of the movies he's appeared in work just as well with a lead of a different name?

Potential blockbuster!!!
I agree 'without remorse' is a much better book than any of the 'jack ryan' ones, has eveyrthing in it from action, crime, rehabilitation, revenge, love etc etc.I would expect it to be a more worthy hollywood film adaption, even a potential blockbuster!!! ... Read More

Flashman
I like James Bland; the thinking man's hero, but none of the stories that Tom Clancy wrote are easily adaptable to the modern age. For that matter, it's unlikely that an original plot will have Clancy's depth............ ... Read More

RE: Ryan Gosling To Play Jack Ryan?
If their going to do a new Clancy adaptation then it should be 'Without Remorse' and give up on Ryan all together. ... Read More

By the book
It's a good point that someone would try to fill the void after Bourne, because Jack Ryan is a capable enough character to be able to do that. I am a little skeptical about not adapting one of the books though. There is still Red Rabbit for instance or maybe Gosling could play Ryan Jr. in Teeth of The Tiger. It's interesting though, when watching the commentary on Sum of All Fears, that Clancy seems kind of disappointed by how they strayed from the book on that one, because in my eyes that was t... Read More

Wrong Idea.
Whoever has come up with the idea of doing a further Jack Ryan film that wont be based on a Tom Clancy book needs their head cheking. the previous films were all realy good, good stories and characters because they were based on the storylines and characters created by Tom Clancytherefore they all tied in together. whomever is scribing this film needs to have an intimate knowledge of the Clancy books and also the Jack Ryan character or there is a real, 'clear and present danger' of ruining this ... Read More

Looks to me like someone, somewhere is trying to fill the void left by Bourne. Expect Bourne esque action aplenty. Could be worth a look. I still associate the role with Ford to be honest. ... Read More

They messed up
The Ryan series of novels has been so badly mismanaged its untrue. They could've been superb. As it is only Hunt For Red October and Patrion Games were really any good. However, saying all that, seeing as a lot of other franchises are going back to roots (Bond, Batman, Star Trek) I would welcome a good old fashioned cold war thriller based on Cardinal Of The Kremlin or Red Rabbit. ... Read More

By Any Means Necessary
Jack Ryan wasn't America's James Bond, he simply doesn't stay in the memory as a personality for long enough after the credits roll. You've got Jason Bourne and Jack Bauer as America's super-spies. The Jack Ryan films are great, but I'll stick with Jason Bourne if I want an intelligent spy thriller. ... Read More

I loved the 4 films. I think Jack Ryan was Americas James Bond but what made them great is that Jack is not a combatant, he's a pencil pusher that gets caught in places where your natural human instinct kicks in to defend yourself & fight for what is right. Ok so he was in the marines so he has basic knowledge on how to use a gun. I think Gosling is one of the greatest actors of his time with Matt damon but you can't have a Jack Ryan film that isn't a Clancy noval that's like making starwars... Read More

I like the Jack Ryan character but if the film is not based on a Tom Clancy novel then they should not use the Jack Ryan character - just give the main charcter a different name, Ryan Jackson maybe ;) ... Read More
