Shatner Still Not Happy About Star Trek Or, rather, his non-appearance in same Source: The Huffington Post
JJ Abrams started shooting his Star Trek reboot a couple of weeks ago, with Chris Pine filling the tight yellow jumper that once belonged to William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk.
Yet, though Abrams has cast both Leonard Nimoy and Heroes’ Zachary Quinto as older and younger versions of Spock, the director was regrettably unable to find room in his storyline for a cameo from The Shat – and boy, don’t we know it.
Since Abrams informed The Shat of his decision, the man who is arguably the world’s greatest actor/singer/author/raconteur has been pretty vocal about it – and he’s at it again!
In an interview with Extra TV, reported on The Huffington Post, The Shat sounded off about his non-inclusion in the new Trek. “How could you not put one of the founding figures into a movie that was being resurrected?,” he asks. “That doesn't make good business sense to me!"
Well, perhaps not, The Shat, but then we’d argue that: a) the brand name of Star Trek alone carries plenty of appeal; b) Kirk flaming well died in Star Trek: Generations, so unless Abrams’ reboot happens to feature ravenous zombies, it’s unlikely that Kirk would be able to beam up from his current resting place.
Empire loves and adores The Shat, and is gutted that there’s no place for him in the new movie. However, it’s hard to see how his appearance wouldn’t have been cheesy or – to use Spock’s favourite word – illogical.
Mind you, The Shat did go on to praise the movie, perhaps mindful that, with a couple of months of filming left, Abrams could yet find room for him. “They are going in a different direction, and it will be a wonderful film.”
So, readers, what do you think? Has Abrams dropped the ball by not finding a place for The Shat? Or has he done the right thing? Leave your comments below...
I Don't think he actually needs to be in this film but just wants to be because of the fact that spock is in it, you don't hear walter koenig and george takei bitching about not being in the trek film. ... Read More
I love the Shat and it would have been nice if the story had a logical way to include him.
But obviously it doesnt so he needs to just get over it. Come on Shat dont make yourself sound like an egomaniac. ... Read More

Star Trek needs to move forward , not keep harping on about the same old same old !! Shatner has had a carreer outside of Trek world . Lets boldly go on without him , dont we have a new young Kirk ?? Keep him out of the loop or things could get silly and ruin the new movie . ... Read More
In any sci-fi series there are oppotunities to resserect lost favourite charactors if necessary , time warps, cloning, twin brothers etc but only if important to the plot. I hope Abrams tells the Shatner and the fan-boy where to shove their suggestions ... Read More
Not having shatner there is just daft. He made kirk the hero we all love, to ignore him is just stupid.
On a different note, i wish they could have done a ds9 movie.
In my opinion it was the best star trek series. ... Read More

Having Shatner play another character is ridiculous. There are two ways to go about it--1. Explain Kirk's return as having happened well before the movie. 2. Have the time travel result in Kirk's return, which apparently is now important to the timeline. Shatner's role can be as large or as small as necessary to the story. But the bottom line is to waste this opportunity is terrible. No Shatner, no money, at least from my point of view.

While I would love to see the Shat back as Kirk, bringing him back would have to be the focus of the movie. From what I gather, Eric Bana's Romulon villain tries to change the timeline by killing young Kirk. Old Spock (Nimoy) goes back back in time to help his younger self stop this. There would have to be some convoluted explanation about why old Kirk is there looking years older than he did when he died, and this movie is not about that. Also, it would be too weird to have Shat playing anothe... Read More
Abrams still has time to work Mr. Shatner in this movie. Any writer who can't figure out how to bring the character back in a time travel story really shouldn't be writing this movie. Abrams basically lied to the fans by saying he was desperately trying to get Shatner in the movie, and not delivering. He teased the possibility for over a year, and didn't deliver. If he can't deliver William Shatner, he's obviously not capable of delivering a good Star Trek movie, and my attitude is basically... Read More
