Well, colour us surprised. JJ Abrams' Star Trek re-boot has found its Scotty and it's one Simon Pegg. We would have laid money on the role of chief engineer going to massive Star Trek geek and real live Scot James McAvoy. But we're not going to argue with the choice, since we're sure Pegg will do a terrific job.
Pegg's not the only new Enterprise crew member this morning. John Cho, the Harold half of Harold and Kumar, will play Sulu, the ship's Helmsman.
That makes the Enterprise bridge all but full. As well as Pegg and Cho, Zachary Quinto is Spock, Zoe Saldana is Uhura and Anton Yelchin is Chekhov. Chris Pine is said to be in discussions to play the key role of Captain Kirk. With Eric Bana also on board as the villain, that leaves only first Enterprise captain, Christopher Pike, and Kirk's parents to be filled. And also, as someone just reminded me, Bones.
The movie is set to shoot within the next few months.

Oh dear, expect Empire to go into yet another frenzy now that their pet Pegg is involved in one of next year's biggest films. They'll be calling for the equally unremarkable Edgar Wright to take over from Abrahms next. ... Read More
In the original TV series, Chekhov did not become part of the crew until the second season, or year two of the five year mission. I suppose he could still have been on board The Enterprise, but before a promotion to ships navigator, and therefore not on the bridge... ... Read More
I'm sure some great Star Trek almanac which I've never read goes into great detail about Scotty's heritage but ... given that the only previous actor in the role was from the other side of the atlanic (and did a shite Scottish accent as far as I'm concerned) I think faboys and girls should adjust their priorities. I'd be the first to ask "why give the part to someone of the wrong nationality when there's perfect choices of the right nationality?" and I'd also like to hear an example o... Read More

I'm Scottish, so I know the old English bloke trying to sound Scottish gig can just be awful, and they always sound like they're from waaay up north or something- not exactly a true reflection of the majority of accents north of the border. But his wife Maureen is Scottish, I'm sure he's picked something up, she'll set him right. I'm going to leave his awful Dr Terrible's House of Horrible Scottish accent to him being ironic and cross my fingers. ... Read More
