The story of a 15-year-old hermaphrodite, who has to cope with the challenges of her medical condition.
Argentinian director Puenzo’s dazzling debut landed the Critics' Week Grand Prize at Cannes, which is a relief given the potential of a film about a 15 year-old hermaphrodite to go horribly wrong. Inés Efron is mesmerising as the feisty yet fragile Alex, whose family move to a remote island, “to avoid being told what to do by every idiot we met”. Hoping her intersexual daughter will make a decision on her sexuality, Alex’s mother invites a surgeon friend, his bland wife and adolescent son to the island, much to the distaste of husband, Kraken (a superb Ricardo Darín). Puenzo’s study of sexual identity, parental authority and social alienation is the most original coming-of-age drama you'll see this year.
