Police Sergeant Howie arrives on a remote Scottish island in a search for a missing girl. There he finds a hostile populace, indifferent to his hunt and hiding a dark secret.

Supervised by director Robin Hardy, this version of the 1973 classic has lost a redundant, awkward prologue but brings back some of the quirkier, sexier, folkier elements that were trimmed from the original. It remains a superb mystery-horror-musical-folklore picture.

Still a classic, now enhanced by some judicious edits.
